I don't want him to go anywhere. We need him. But shut up and quit bitching about pre season after you get hurt. Did you hear anyone else bitching about it? No. I think he was showing up Gibbs and the coaching staff. That's all I'm saying. I don't want him outta here at all. Only unless someone offers us a Hershal Walker type deal.

I'd much rather discuss the numerous things wrong with our defense. It's not like we should be hard up for discussion around here, there's plenty of REALISTIC things to discuss.
We'll make sure to run everything by you to make sure it's an acceptable hypothetical, then. Seriously, this board is so crammed with the same "D sucks"/"JC looks promising"/"Where's Lloyd?" threads, you really can't slam someone for introducing a new topic every now and then, even if it isn't something that has much, if any, chance of happening. At least this question is based on an actual news report, as unsubstantiated as it might be.

These threads happen, and sometimes (like here) there is a legitimate question buried in there if you dig - he's essentially asking, what kind of compensation is required to get a team to sign away its franchise player? It's worth discussing, even if it is a relatively short answer (I'm sticking by a starting player + first rounder).

However, like I said, I agree there is no chance Portis is going anywhere.

i also agree, but thought it would be an interesting discussion. sorry schneed, we can back to the ramsey vs. brunell talk, or any of those old, tired, washed out threads that you would rather talk about. but, let me repeat, i want portis here, and do not think he will be traded

Yes, Faulk was at the height of his career, but your lack of knowledge regarding the salary cap is very apparent here. Faulk was not under a huge contract at the time, he was under the original contract which he signed after being drafted. He was also nearing the end of that contract, meaning almost all of his signing bonus which he received as a rookie had been allocated and shifted off the books at that point. The Colts didn't have to absorb much of a cap hit.

On the contrary, Portis is still in the earlier stages of his new $50 million contract. For each of the years he has remaining on his contract, the Redskins would have to absorb that proportion of his signing bonus as a cap hit in 2007. That makes trading him cost-prohibitive. That's just a fact my friend.

As far as Gibbs' tendencies, he tends to trade draft picks away for veteran players, not the other way around. He also tends to like veteran players, so while Demeco Ryans is a pretty good young player; he's still a first year guy. The Texans just don't have players or picks that Gibbs would be interested in.

I hope you stick around on this board, RiggoRaider. I'd love to get your reaction when Gibbs laughs at the reporter who suggests that the Redskins and Texans might consider a Portis deal.
If you would take a minute to breath and stop taking people post apart thinking that they are on a trade Portis crucade you would see that they are speaking hypothetically. Also you would've read that I even said that I think that Portis will not be traded BUT my point was that you can never say never.

You are right I do not have salary cap knowledge nor do I have the time to figure all that out I have a job and a pretty active personal life so there are some things I leave for other people to do. But I am sure that the Redskins and other teams have worked around similar problems in the past.

You should just calm down, enjoy the post (which I think is a very good one), or don't enjoy the post because there plenty here to enjoy...THERE IS NO ONE HERE THAT CAN TRADE CP OR ARE TRYING TO TRADE HIM...he will still be gaining you your necessary yardage on your MADDEN '07

Re: Portis trade rumor

the reason why the skins would consider it is that portis has an insane contract. If they offer that high a pick, it'd be easy to trade down, and get a depth RB + another starter on defense.
