The contract sign date is actually the tenth week of the regular season. If the draftee does not sign by week 10, then he can re-enter the next years draft. Unless, before the next draft he agrees to a deal with the club that drafted him, that deal is for the NEXT season and he is ineligible to play after week 10 even if he signs a contract. He would actually start playing the next league year.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Luck isn't feeling the draft this year, he can return to Stanford for another season. But here's the real deal: LUCK WILL BE DRAFTED BY INDY. He will sit behind Manning for 2-3 years, or possibly earlier depending on Manning's health. BREES WILL BE RETAINED BY THE SAINTS.
Not to be rude, but move on people, all of the speculation of the Skins getting ANY OF THESE THREE QB's IS PURLY DELUSIONAL. So, lets move on from fantasy land and evaluate who we would like to get out of the remaining attainable QB's...

There's a decent chance the Colts aren't going to take Luck. Based on the assumption that they feel pretty confident PM is healthy here's my take.

PM is 35, he's got a good 4 years left most likely. He doesn't get hit like most QB's.
The return:
2012 1st round, 2nd round
2013 1st round
2014 high pick
With free agency adding to the roster, I believe they'd have a great shot at another SB.

Publically they'll offer some smoke screens but I think there's a chance they won't draft him.

The only way I see Indy not taking him is, if he doesn't enter the draft. The only other possibility I see him not being a Colt is, if they trade him or the #1 pick away for beaucoup compensation.

PM has a really tricky situation with his injury. It might be several more months before they are sure he can play or not, even then it's going to be dicey. I think the Colts have to think long term and Luck is someone that they simply cannot afford to pass over.

Odds are Luck goes to Indy.

The only way Indy DOES NOT take Luck is if.....Vinnie is now calling the shots in the Hoosier state....

I think the Colts are in the best situation to move on from P. Manning right now. Manning's health is a true concern and I really don't think they should risk by staying with Manning. Plus they have an opportunity to once again get a franchise QB in the draft.

Re: Should Oliver Luck pull a power play on the Colts?

The way I see it no one will know anything for sure until next April but we will have a better idea of what may happen one month before the draft. I'm not 100% on the exact date and amount but Manning is due to receive a giant roster bonus, some thing over 20 mil I believe, in mid march. If he takes that bonus that will more likely than not mean he will be returning to the colts and they will be trading the first pick away, unless he pulls a Haynesworth that is.

I guess the question is: how does the bonus work if Manning gets traded to another team? Because if another team has to pick up the bonus, the Colts won't have any trading partners.

Re: Should Oliver Luck pull a power play on the Colts?

It looks like that if the Colts are going to move on without Manning, they will most likely need to trade him to whatever team Manning wants (and maybe lessening the compensation) so Manning agrees to move the bonus payment date. Unless they keep him and sit Luck for the first season.
