When I give suggestions on movies people probably havent seen, ill mention City of God. Ill agree on Lock Stock and Deer Hunter, overrated. See Snatch over Lock Stock, Guy's second effort is a classic.
I just don't like movies which i have to read. The only ones that I like which are subtitled are Hero and Pans Labyrinth. City of God definitely wasn't one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but it definitely isn't a top 20 movie either, which was what I'm getting at. Obviously you one of the +100,000 people on IMDB who think so. I just thought it was annoying how they had all these flashbacks and movies with people who are in poverty with the constant killing and drug lords, isn't exactly an 'uplifting' film for the most part of it.

Hero is phenomenal, visually and narratively.

As for City of God, the Rio favelas don't exactly scream uplifting. To paint it anything differently would be doing a great disservice to the city's realism. The movie did have moments of levity and humor... Much like life, the film showed a balance with the characters' harsh reality.

Spoiler:

And in the end, didn't Rocket win out?

For those who liked City of God, I highly recommend Tropa de Elite and its sequel. Many Brazilians consider it the better film(s) than City of God.

Epic flick. I got a chance to see Fight Club in class, before it was released. Edward Norton came for the post-screening interview- dude is super intelligent.

Re: Your All-Time Favorite Movies

Dumb and Dumber is a must-watch every time it's on TV for me.

I'm more of a sports guy than movie guy. Last thing I saw in the theater was Cars 2 with my son. Before that it was Happy Feet at an iMax about 5 years ago.
