Throughout his career until 2019. Since then he has missed an average of 8 games a year. Missed 10 last year. Dude is toast. You want to bring him here to help with his knowledge of the offense make him a TE coach and save the roster spot.

It isn’t a huge deal, but I really don’t think the guy brings anything to the table.

He's no doubt coming here at a bargain price on a one year deal. We have the money to find out if he is toast or he can play a role in our offense. This is a no risk scenario. If he's done, then cut him. If he sticks, we'll have a veteran influence in the TE room.

You make valid points. But he's clearly better than what they have now and this draft class is weak at a position that usually takes a year or 2 to develop. I don't know which other TEs are available but this seems like a risk worth taking.

Not sure about Henry but I'd make a run at Fant as he might just be coming into his prime years.

I dont think this draft class is weak at TE. I also don’t think that a guy on the sidelines is better than one on the field.
He has really good hands when healthy but is absolutely terrible with YAC and a non blocker so what kind of wisdom is he imparting to any young tight end?

Like I said though it isn’t a big deal at all. If he can stay healthy for 10 games and shows some productivity getting first downs that is great.

Neither do I, Punch. For those who want to see some very good TE talent in this class they should take a look at these players.

Brock Bowers - UGA
Ja'Tavion Sanders - Texas. Great talent. Big play machine. Comp: Shannon Sharpe
Theo Johnson - PSU.
Tanner McLachlen - AZ. Big. Catches everything. Good at yac.
Ben Sinnott - KSU. Great hands. Runs wild in the secondary. Comp: Chris Cooley.
Cade Stover - OSU. Truly does it all. Comp: Brian Mitchell because he plays so tough.
Jaheim Bell - More of an H-Back or FB in the NFL.

We could get a productive TE in this class if we want one.

Waste of time signing Ertz. Injury plagued and past his prime. Seems like Kingsberry and Peters are throwing him a bone.

Absolutely. He's probably not even top 5 on that list.

I see 2 possibilities; they see one or 2 FA's that they like better than Curl, or they see him coming back on a lesser deal than he thought he'd get in earlier negotiations/on the open market. Either one is fine by me, though there is teh 'devil you know' aspect to re-signing him.

Re: Commanders 2024 Free Agency Thread

I wonder, given the number of teams with cap issues and the amount of cap space we have whether the FO is thinking about leveraging the cap space this year to get extra draft picks by effectively trading the cap space, it had been done before.

Re: Commanders 2024 Free Agency Thread

I think they'll use this year to fill some holes with short term deals, draft the QB of the future, and start rebuilding the roster through the draft. I don't think they'll trade cap space (didn't know that was a thing), or make a ton of big splashes in FA.

If they hit on the QB, are competitive in the division, and improve the facilities, this will be a more desirable destination for players next year.

We have a ton of cap space, so why wouldn't we add a young star or two now to anchor our team? Josh Allen, for example, is a 26 year old Pro Bowl Edge. Pay him the money! He likes money, I assume. To me, money trumps a warmer shower room any day.

Also, are you not listening to what our new GM and HC keep telling us about not rebuilding but intending to win now? I believe them, so I say let them over-spend to beat out the other teams for FA's they want.

Not that I wish to deter your enthusiasm, but Josh Allen has been franchise tagged and AP himself said they would not be big spenders

If Quinn wants a player, the FO should make every effort to get them. If Peters likes a player he should collaborate with Quinn on how he fits, then get the player. Given the state of the division is every reason to believe that they can put a division winning roster together. All four teams have new defensive coordinators, two have new offensive coordinators, and And the two division leaders from last year fell apart And are rife for internal strife.
