Zorn doesn't even belong in the conversation.

Just curious, why are you surprised by this? He's coached here, and with Gruden for the Tuskers. Seems like all the other coaching additions.

I realize all that, I just thought they might go in a different direction I guess.

Re: Jay Gruden hired as head coach of the Redskins

Well, from what I understand, Haslett's contract was not extended, so perhaps this is a "show me" situation and Jay just kept him on board as a favor for giving him the Tuskers gig a few years back. I still would like to bring in another defensive mind to help out. Perhaps we snag the other Phillips? (Doubt that happens, though.)

I mentioned Ike but he was the one person I hoped that they did not select. He has not brought value to the franchises that he has worked for. I hoped they would have considered other options.

Why not? After all, he's the only coach that the Maroon, Yellow, and Black has ever had.

Re: Jay Gruden hired as head coach of the Redskins

I have waited to vote until we saw if Gruden retained Haslett.

I voted, I don't like the hire

Now that he has retained Haslett...and even talked about "extension"....we have seen the complete lack of leadership that I feared was possible...rather than putting his foot down for the benefit of the team, he has retained the leader of the worst Redskins defense I have ever seen...why?....because he couldn't get the linebacker coach from Cincinnati.

It looks to me like Gruden hires who he knows...not who is best. There are probably 31 defensive coordinators that are better than Haslett today...and probably a dozen position coaches that would be better. I am disappointed but not suprised that they are keeping Haslett....I am SHOCKED that gruden spoke of an extension....and it shows very bad common sense to express publicly that you wanted to get the linebackers coach from Cincinnati, but didn't because he was promoted over there to defensive coordinator...what a blow to confidence in Haslett...hopefully, the comment about extending him was just a way to try to boost team confidence in Haslett...but good luck with that...even Fletcher expressed joy when he thought Haslett was no longer going to be the coordinator.

Gruden is creating a problem on the defensive side even before day one...it looks like more drama for Redskins park...YAY!

The Redskins are FOOLS for not getting a new defensive coordinator this year!

So with Has back in the fold I would expect Rak not to be going anywhere.

JG -- Hey Haslett and I are good, I can work with him.

BA -- Good answer Jay.

in other words, while I hope Jay was given the option not to keep him, the team made clear that their preference was to let the contract play out.

I have no proof of this, just how I hope it went. Remember, Jay didn't change out a lot of the Bengals staff when he took over at OC. He seems to be a "I'll work with who's there" type coach.
I'm positive the conversation was similar to this....lol.

Re: Jay Gruden hired as head coach of the Redskins

lol, every good spinster knows to always put the unpopular news out there on a friday afternoon.

i just hope an immediately improved secondary = immediately improved defense.

smoot - any truth to the leak that shanny forced Has to play primarily zone when he wanted to primarily play man?

ps - zorn will always hold a special place with me. his overly candid interviews/press conferences when he first started, his cheesey "hip hip hoorays!" and of course calling swing-gate twice late in the season just to piss the DS off after the DS effectively neutered him publicly (and banned fans from bringing signs)

zorn was the effin man in my book.

Re: Jay Gruden hired as head coach of the Redskins

While i expected Has to be gone this year no matter what, I have to concede that if half of what has been said about Shanny overruling him is true and the lack of money put to that side of the ball i will be in the wait and see mode. It probably has a lot to do about money, but to be fair a lot of HC's hire guys who they are comfortable with.

I'm more surprised about Haslett being kept than disappointed.

Looks like we could have let Haz ride off into the sunset but lassoed him back.
