Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

can't see them losing moss or randel el.i do think that mathis and thrash are gone though.i'm sure JC is excited to have 2 very capable te's as options now too.
i just hope folks do'nt expect these two wideouts to come in and be jerry rice right out of the gate.

The thing to remember though, is that Greg Blache was always the first to defend the D-line when they weren't getting close to the QB with the pass rush. Clearly, his opinion hasn't changed and is fine with the pressure these guys are able to generate.
Are there more quality WRs and receiving TEs or OL and DL on day two? That about sums it up. We have some of the better coaches at the later positions too.

Let's judge the draft as a whole and then look at it in three years.
But I want to judge it now!!!

They'll wait until we'll have to cut one and get them as a FA.
Neither is going to get cut (or else you really can blast the FO). Moss and ARE are really the only guys that are assured of being on the team. Caldwell, McCardell are gone; and beyond that you are looking at Thrash, Mix, and Mathis. Not exactly world beaters. You're going to carry 5-6 WRs so Moss, ARE, Thomas, Kelly, and a couple of other special team performers. I don't know that it is total overkill at WR because they really didn't have any depth or size at that position and now they do. Plus, it takes time for WRs to develop typically.

We gave up one of the thirds via trade. We only have the Comp. 3rd (one pick).

I know it was only the second but they still got first round talent in the second round. The pay scale is a tad different wouldn't you say ? I thought we only had one left in the third.

We traded one of our thirds to ATL. There must be a trade in the works for ARE, or Moss. I doubt Moss though.

Great point, this was mkind of my take on our picks. No wide recievers picked in the first round allowed us to load up with quality talent in that position. I cant believe we picked Davis when we did, BUT, I also can't believe He was the third TE taken! He was the best TE in the draft IMO. As Matty said " The offense is open for buisiness!"

I hope Bowman is still around in the 6th or 7th round. He'd be an absolute steal

Yeah, but you generally don't need your 3rd, 4th, and 5th wideouts to be "world beaters". I'm on record that this means more to Moss and Randle El than people think.

I think Zorn was completely dissatisfied with his current options at wide receiver.

Lay it on nice and thick Smoot. Weird first day, I liked the first pick, was alright with the 2nd. 3rd pick was ricockulous. Guess the defense will be on their own this year. What's the best left out there for our cb and de needs?

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

It seems we;re drafting like we won a SB last year. Picking value guys for depth. I am amazed. Our two glaring weaknesses and the anchors of the team have been ignored. I don't mind value picks but they need to mak sense. For god's sake trade down again if the best value left is for a position where the best player position-wise(TE) on your team has a strangle hold on the spot.

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

I'm fine with the two WRs. I'm not sold on Moss or ARE. Plus, if we pick two maybe one will pan out. But the TE pick is just terribly confusing.

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

The sky really isn't falling. Our redzone offense was a joke last year. Plain and simple. We are running a completely different scheme now. Possibly Zorn wanted some big targets and there wasn't a player out there that was better at the time they selected. It's not like the season is over today and we've tanked it. There are still more picks, and more time. So many of us scream on how the best players are found in the later rounds, well, give them time to find those guys. Our Wide Outs just got a lot bigger, throw the ball up and one of our guys has a better chance at coming down with it now.
