Re: All things offseason discussion part II

I think we have to look hard at Flowers. Given our secondary we need to be always looking to improve it if a smart option comes up. Not sure either way but not too often do pro-bowl players get cut in the middle of June like this

Re: All things offseason discussion part II

Flowers is good enough to make the Redskins, but he's not really the impact contributor he once was. He's probably going to get a multiple year offer from a team like Houston or Dallas that needs the help more immediately, and the only way he makes sense here is as a one year insurance policy against the stalled development of David Amerson or the sudden decline of Tracy Porter or DeAngelo Hall. Having a guy who can start for you in a pinch is always nice, but the constraints of a 53 man roster make carrying a guy like Flowers as a healthy inactive a luxury that most teams cannot afford.

Given that signing him would require another roster move to free up cap space, I'd recommend that they pass.

Heard down the stretch he struggled but you coulda said that for most the team. Flowers could start here and play well imo. I dont think he will get a huge deal.

No he won't get a huge deal. The issue is that they're already in two years on Porter, and the roster move that would make the most sense to grab Flowers is to release Porter, in which case, you are paying Porter to not play for you.

You could make an argument for either player being better at this point. Both were top corners last year on defenses that struggled against the pass. Flowers has been almost strictly a man to man guy since he's been in the league, and the Redskins are going to have to play more man this year. But Haslett has traditionally played zone when he isn't bringing pressure, and that leans more towards what Porter has done in his career.

I ultimately don't think one projects to be way better than the other, and if the Redskins were happy with Tracy Porter in March, I'm not sure why they would be dissatisfied with him in June.

Help me understand the bolded statement. He made his first career pro bowl last year. I fully recognize that the pro bowl is just a beauty pageant but I thought he had a good year last year. Why was last year not up to par with previous?

Re: All things offseason discussion part II

I think signing Flowers this year would be a challenge. It could be done though. They have about $2M in space currently and could free some by booting Stephen Bowen or Leonard Hankerson or Kedric Golston or Santana Moss, or a few other options. But I don't think they'd be keen on doing that just yet, not sure how much depth they feel like they can give up.

I admittedly have no clue what kind of deal Flowers would garner. I imagine it won't be small, he's coming off a pro-bowl appearance.

I would welcome Flowers and he could certainly make our team immediately more competitive -- on paper. It's all talk right now in the offseason, but IF the offense lives up to the hype, IF our D-line is better, and IF our safeties are decent / not too old ---> another pro bowl corner could be what could have us keep up with the top teams late in the season.

But, I worry about Andy Reid, whenever we take his scraps. He's been shown to have a good eye for aged veterans and screwed us several times in the past.

I know Jon Gruden was a big Flowers fan. He raved about him for an entire monday game I watched. Wonder if he will talk to his brother

I love Gruden but it seems exponentially harder to find a player he doesn't like.

Fake Al Davis

Gruden has all the answers, until you ask him to play F/M/K with Josh Johnson, John Beck and Rich Gannon

From another forum (2010) Jon Gruden is obnoxious - Page 2

The problem with Gruden is you can tell how badly he wants to be back as a coach in the league. He absolutely refuses to be critical of anybody, because he doesn't want to say something to piss off any owner.

If he was willing to give a true insight, he would be much better......because he's actually a smart dude. Instead, he's too worried about his comments coming back to bite him in the ass.

This is 100% accurate.

Anyone see Gruden's 'QB Kamp' special on ESPN last spring before the draft? He was critical, harsh, and honest with all the rookie QB's. Really interesting to watch.

Then I turn on MNF and he sounds like a junior varsity cheerleader. Every sentence starts with "Boy, I really like (name of player, defensive unit, coach)". It's amazing how American broadcast sports are under the impression that announcers can't be honest and objective. You don't get this anywhere else in the world, outside of N. Korea
Ironically enough time has shown that his interest in actually returning to coaching doesn't have nearly enough steam to get him out of the booth but I remember especially when he started that the knock on Gruden as an announcer was he never seemed to say anything bad about anyone on MNF. Sure he would go off on mistakes but then he would come back and talk about how players who made said mistakes were great football players.

John Madden was no different. He did the exact same thing that Jon does.

Must be in the (first) name. Ironically though part of the reason I love Jon Gruden, at least as a coach was in behind the scenes footage he would rarely hesitate to get onto his guys but he always seemed to make sure they knew that he believed in them. That rare type of leader that can somehow allow you to be relaxed and keep you on your toes.

Announcer wise he really is top notched. For me when he's breaking down actual football plays and concepts he brings everything you get with someone like Jaworski but with a lot more enthusiasm.

And to be fair he's nowhere near as 'kind' as he was when he first got in the booth. Heck just as recently as the draft he seemed more then willing to strongly disagree with picks. Ray Lewis on the other hand....lol.....very good football breakdowns, way to many good things to say about everyone.
