Bartel is probably the practice squad/emergency QB in all possible outcomes. That's better security than Beck, who is competing with Grossman to make the team.

Middling. He was a spread quarterback at BYU, and the Dolphins didn't run a downfield offense when they drafted him.

It's not a limitation or anything, but arm strength rarely is.

Re: Redskins Acquire QB John Beck (for CB Doug Dutch)

As I stated in the Colt thread, this move is interesting. Shanahan has stated he usually carries only 2 QBs. Although Beck's chance of making the team is not zero, it surely isn't much above 5%. Did they need another arm to throw balls to our 10 WR's?

I think the CB Dutch probably wouldn't have made the team either, but perhaps (?) he had a higher chance of making it.

Then again, Shanahan doesn't seem to play favorites, and if this guy magically impresses and shows the potential that made him a 2nd round pick.. I guess he could beat Rexy. Seriously doubt it. Practice squad as detailed above....

Probably needed to buy more footballs.

Yeah, he's an arm for camp but I do think he's here for competition for the #3 job. MS has went with only 2 QBs in the past so that's a possibility, but it seems more likely that he'll carry 3.

Beck and Bartel will get most of the playing time in preseason. If Bartel beats Beck out, he probably ends up on the practice squad. Doubt he makes it to the active roster.

If Beck wins out, then it probably means (has to mean) Skins go 3 deep at QB.

If the unforeseen happens, Beck (or Bartel) actually makes it to #2 QB and someone out there needs Grossman in a trade. That scenario I seriously doubt will happen.

Just like Haynesworth though, Colt really has no one to blame but himself

Even if we don't carry 3, he can sit on the practice squad. At the very least, it pushes Rexy a bit.

This is a really nice trade for Doug Dutch, who has a pretty good chance to be the no. 5 CB on a playoff team. In competition with Cary Williams and Travis Fisher for that honor.

I don't really see the skins keeping 3 QB's unless Beck forces their hand by lighting it up all summer. I think this is most likely about Colt being so bad that it was detrimental to the rest of the offenses development to have him taking snaps. Shanny probably just needed a better camp arm.

You really think we traded for Beck just to release him ? I think not ... They will have 3 QBS on roster for the 2010 season .. #5 - #8 - #9

Beck has a greater than zero chance of being the no. 2 QB this year, which I believe is the rational behind the trade. I'll bet trade talks started between the Ravens and the Redskins on the topic of their CB depth, and that we tried to get a draft pick out of them, but couldn't. Doug Dutch wasn't going to make our team, and Beck wasn't going to make theirs (unless Troy Smith was traded), so the ability to look at John Beck in the preseason seems like a no-brainer.

In all likelyhood, he's going to get released before the season. He'd have to beat out Grossman for a roster spot, and there's enough evidence out there to think that Rex is just better. But with this trade, Shanahan can make the decision for himself.
Colt was to some extent a fan favorite. With Grossman entrenched as the #2 QB Shanahan won't have to worry about the fans calling for Colt in the event Grossman has to play and does not do well. Colt threw his worst passes of the summer with Shanahan watching closely.

The Ravens desperately need help in their secondary, Dutch is a far cry from being any form of an answer. Fred Smoot is still out there, maybe they should ring him up.

Re: Redskins Acquire QB John Beck (for CB Doug Dutch)

I think you guys are missing an important point here regarding roster moves this time of the year; if Rex or, God forbid, McNabb goes down you have to bring in a guy that's familiar with the system in a pinch.

So even if Beck doesn't make the squad (ditto J.Galloway), they've spent sufficient time in the system and can get in there on short notice and suit up. I think in cases like this, the coaches are preparing with one eye down the road in the event of untimely injuries.

Not to release him but I wouldn't consider him a lock close to a lock make the team. The last time Shanahan carried 3 QB's was when there was a little bit more uncertainty at the position in 2003 when they brought in Jake Plummer. After Plummer proved himself Shanahan started carrying two QB's. In our case McNabb is much more proven at this point then Plummer was during his first year with the Broncos.

With the Beck trade you're basically looking at an exchange that only cost us a CB that was a long shot to make the final roster around the same time you were looking to cut your third or fourth string QB.
