Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency

im against it this year..normally we go off spending too much money on OLDER over the hill players..but this year there was a fresh crop of good talent and i think we're taking a backseat so we won't be the "oh there goes the redskins spending again cliche"..bad move..sign good players and we'll be okay

w/all due respect, it sounds as if your still stuck on the 2000 signings of Deion, Carrier, B. smith, etc.

Since then, what "over the hill" players have the Skins signed for big $? We've brought in some old vets at low prices, e.g. Godfrey, Fabini & Wade, but look at all the others we've signed, they're all under 30 & in their prime:

Coles, ARE, Loyd (no prime for this guy though, lol), Carter, Washington, Springs, Griffin, even Arch.

The only over 30 players we gave considerable $ to since 01 that I can think of are Phillip Daniels & Brunell, both aren't stars but IMO have been good contributors. Of courese more recently Collins, but we know he's got value for us.

i'm more concerned about dropping the ball on good talent..in my eyes the best pick-up trade or FA is clinton portis and springs..Carter had a good season but lets call a spade a spade.Arch,Lloyd and even Brunell(in my eyes cost us more games then won)are noteable bad choices. I'm just saying if there was a time to spend its now.

Michael Turner got:

The deal is worth $34.5 million with approximately $15 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN.com's Michael Smith.

He's never had more than 500 yards rushing in one season. Vinny and Co. are looking very good right now. These prices are insane!

I certainly think the Redskins could be more active in free agency than they currently are. We've got enough cap room to sign quality depth players and a starter or two. But, I don't think they could afford to sign more than 1 big-name free agent unless they backloaded the contract so heavily that they might run into problems retaining that player down the road.

I certainly agree that some of the moves, particularly Arch & Loyd, have backfired to say the least. We can debate Brunell, but that's already been done too much here.

My only point is about the age of players we've acquired, and I stick to what I said; that since the famed 2000 season, we haven't signed many old players to noteworthy contracts, mainly just cheap depth signings.

I think this offseason will be a good example of that as well, we may sign some 30-somethings, but it will be for 1-2 years & close to our beloved VET MIN!

Well look who he has been stuck behind his entire career. When he has seen the field he is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. I'd say the deal is high but it could be a steel if he works out.

right, so part of the approach is simply waiting for the market to cool & trying to get 2-3 mid level players for reasonable $, rather than 1 big name for big $ or similar. I like it, it shows commitment to the guys here. Hope they continue on this path.

No doubt about it. Just a very high price tag for a maybe. I"m not sure if he's an everydown, go to back. Atlanta did have Dunn so I guess they view Turner as a younger upgrade who learned from LT.

In my opinion, he's not worth it and you can play with LT all you want there is nothing he can teach you to be that good, its natural ability and speed.

Atlanta will continue to suck!

They said they were going to be patient, and so far our big free agent haul consists of re-signing backup QB Todd Collins. In years past we would be sitting here talking about at least 2-3 big signings by now and tens of millions of dollars in new contracts.

Are you in favor of this new approach? Or do we wish we were our usual aggressive selves?
I'm VERY in favor of the way we're approaching this off season. I think everyone here knows that signing a bunch of high priced free agents never ever works. Free agency only works when you've already got the pieces in place. You can't build your team buying other teams players. I'm in favor of drafting guys, letting them learn your system and if they deserve to be rewared then re-new their contracts. Just like we did with Cooley. And I'm hoping we'll do the same with our younger guys that are still on their first contracts.

Turner's getting paid on his physical ability and potential. If you're Atl. you need some high character guys, and some guys that have talent. I like move. The contact is probably 15 mil over three years. That's not bad for a starting RB. Now they'd better go get a QB.

Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency

We may be patient, but teams are passing us by this free agency. There were people out there we could make a play for and didn't. No play on Vilma? Dumb! He is young and talented, just didn't fit in the Jets scheme.

Just like we passed by teams in the past in free agency?

A lot of good that did during the season.

And i don't think spending 25-50% of our available cap space on a position that is not even in the top 3 of our needs is very smart.
