Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Betts has been very very impressive these last couple weeks. I'd wager we're all pretty shocked, as he's been merely productive in the past. He might be like Stephen Davis and just explode for a couple of years.
My guess, though, is it will never benefit the Redskins. Good luck, Mr. Betts! |

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
I'd like to see Betts stay, but if it requires anything more than a 5mil bonus, I don't think it would be smart cap mgmt.
Our first priority on O should be resigning Dockery, he played a great game yesterday & is coming into his own. Keep the O-line together & resign him! Today' Washpost mentioned that Betts' agent has been working on an extension all season. It might be a moral victory just to see us resign one of our guys by season's end, but I don't see it, he'll test the mkt. I agree the Jets are a possibility, also Philly. |

I've heard from my top notch, inside sources that the ink is nearly dry on a new contract for Betts. I have no details but should I find any out I will let you know

My initial reaction was joy when I heard this, but when I hear that he's going to get a 100mil contract I might shoot myself.

My only concern is how are we going to get better with a ton of money tied up in our Rb's and WR's? I hope Betts stays but what is his cash value? Most back-up RB's are probably making 1 million or less. |

Sometimes I wonder just how durable Clinton Portis is going to be. Yeah, he's young -- but playing running back can many times take the youth right out a guy.
Not saying he's on the verge of calling it a career, but the wear and tear can pile up quicker on some guys. Remember, it was just a few seasons for Stephen Davis as the primary runner... |

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Today's WashPost (see the link on the Warpath about Novak being cut, end of article under "notebook") reported that a deal is near done. I don't know whether to be happy or scared that he signed for too much. It must be a good deal for him to not test the market.

Could be a sign-and-trade. I guess better to spend a little extra to get some trade value out of it than to get nothing at all. However, I can't imagine why Betts would not want to test the market.

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
Trade deadline has passed, and it would make little to no sense for another team to try & deal for him now when he'd be a fa in march. Only way that makes sense is if a team really thinks it will be a bidding war

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
It would be smart of the team to try to lock him up now, they could always deal him down the road or keep him depending on interest from other teams.
In this league you almost need two RBs capable of carrying the load. |

agreed, just hope that he & his agent aren't milkin DS. My guess is that he gets 7-8 mil. guaranteed over 3 years, unless they sign a 1 yr. deal.

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
The title of this thread shold be "will we have any money left (under the salary cap) after we sign Betts."
I want Betts on the team, but for a reasonable amount of money. Matty- It is proven every year runningback is the easiest position to fill in the draft. It is the easiest position for an NCAA player to transfer quickly into the NFL. Other posititions takes more time to develop. Our number 1 priority this coming offseason is improving the defense. Offensive players, especially runningbacks are easier to find than good, young, cheap defensive players. Lets not break the bank to sign a backup RB. We have a history of overpaying for players. Lets stop that trend. |

Re: So Will We Have The Money For Betts????
am i the only one that saw numerous 10-15 yard gains by betts, and thought Clinton makes a cut and goes for a big gainer. betts is nothing more than a solid back up. and should be paid accordingly. paying him anymore than that screws up the integrity of our salary cap
