This sounds like 2005 all over again with some people deflecting due credit away from Gibbs for any success the team has.
Gibbs kept making all the usual gaffes (poor clock mgmt and overall sideline confusion) then the ST murder happened and JC got hurt. IMO the team leaders like Portis & Smoot rose up and brought this team together and extolled them to play for ST. That kind of thing can only come from a player not a coach. Collins got the O rolling with AS calling the plays and GW had the D humming, Gibbs just got out of the way and let everyone else do their thing.

But if we had Brian Billick or Bill Cowher under the same circumstances with the same results you would have said "Look at the fiery coach taking charge!"

I dont think so. Cowher and Billick would not have been smart enough to get out of the way.

So then you admit that Gibbs was the best coach for this situation.

Couldn't disagree more.

Leadership starts at the top and works it's way down. Gibbs' calm and steadying influence undoubtedly played a role in the teams turnaround and 4 game run. I don't understand how you can downplay that. Sounds like another lame excuse to deflect credit away from Gibbs.

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

I am one who believes in continuity. I have not been a big Gibbs supporter through the season winning or losing and have said multiple times he should step down. However, after listening to the players and how much they fight for Joe is kinda hard to call for him to step down. He has definately got this team to be a "family" and that is hard to do in the todays NFL. I am kinda mixed on this, if he stays good, if he goes we'll be ok too.

The other downside, Irish, is that it is harder for people to get so pissy when Gibbs supporters bring up the 2005 playoff run. It's harder for Gibbs critics to argue that 2/4 of Gibbs' years were flukes.

Why is there a need for a new, energetic coach? Do you think Gibbs is no longer putting in the effort? Do you think Gibbs is too old and out of touch with today's generation?

Re: Should Gibbs stay or go?

Before the season started, if you said we'd finish 9-7, I probably would have that's it for Gibbs. But after what he was able to do in December, I have been reminded why he is one of the best NFL coaches of all time. I really hope - and expect that - he comes back for the 2008 season, at least.
