I think they can, but it'll be tough. I really hate the Scandrick signing. Take that away and McPhee and Hankins is no problem. And I'd much rather have McPhee than Scandrick.

Anderson should not have been drafted to play OLB, either. He's another 2nd Round mistake. I notice his name rarely comes up on this site. That's because he's invisible. His college coach, Lou Saban, said he expected Anderson to play ILB in the pros because he's a good run-stopper but not as good of a pass rusher. Somebody at Redskins Park doesn't know squat about projecting 3-4 OLB prospects.
Agree, he's out of position. He's perfect for ILB in the 3-4 but for some reason he's playing OLB. I don't get what they're doing there but maybe he'll be moved inside when OTA's start. When he rushes the passer he simply could not beat NFL tackles. I remember he was being compared to Freeney. Not even close.

I wonder if they consider resigning Gallette to have another OLB and move him inside. That would work for me.

According to Chick Hernandez, the Skins offered Galette a contract but they low-balled him. They also met with McPhee but didn't sign him when he was here.

I have no idea what they'll do with Anderson.

I totally agree he is out of position at OLB, but I don't believe he would be a fit as 3-4 ILB. He is much slower than any other ILB on our roster, he would be the worst ILB in coverage and I think he would struggle to change directions and get to the hole if he didn't initially make the right read.

He is more of an ILB in a 4-3 who can play down near the line in an over front. (Not my idea, Cooley and others are beating this drum on 980 every time his name comes up)

To be blunt, I don't think he is a good fit any where in our current defensive scheme based on what he showed last year.

Do you think he is fast enough, and quick enough to play ILB in a 3-4?

No idea where he would fit in nickel.

In nickel he'd probably fit on the bench... but I wouldn't give up on our 2nd round pick yet.

The more I think about it, the more our roster fits a 4-3 more than a 3-4:

-Even if we sign Hankins, who could be a nose, he played DT so far, he's not a great pass rusher but he could fit a 4-3, the Colts mainly wanted to save cap

-Smith and Kerrigan can't cover, so they effectively are DEs more than OLBs (Cooley even said Kerrigan could move inside on the line)

-Anderson is not an edge rusher, so with Murphy gone and Galette unsigned, we currently have only 2 "OLBs" (am I forgetting anyone?)

-Brown and Anderson with Foster in the middle would work. Vigil is a solid back up, Spaight had his flashes, Harvey Clemons is a nice hybrid LB, we may need one more guy for depth

(Don't tell me we already run many plays in a 4-3, we don't, we run many plays in a 4-2, which isn't good against the run)

DLs: Hankins, Allen, Ioannidis, Kerrigan, Smith, McGee and Lanier rotating

LBs: Brown and Anderson outside, Foster in the middle

Doesn't it sound good ?

Below average? I am not claiming that Smith is elite player although, I believe he is definitely better than average player and still can get even better. We should try to keep him.. I encourage you to analyze deeper instead of determining a player's worth based on your opinion.

Let's go with your avenue - we let Smith go, who will replace him? Galette? Anderson?

Pretty ambiguous tweet. We will see. I'ld like it if that meant they worked out the numbers for him and Hankins together. I am sure they were trying to balance the DL spending.

i agree - he may NOT be an elite pass rusher, but he's solid. He has a tendancy to make plays as well, he picks the ball off a bit, he's always sniffing around the ball/tackle/play.... he's by no means a slouch and he does get pressure on the qb... yes he may vanish sometimes, but who the f doesnt get tired? Or have the flow of the play going away from them alot? I remember being more surprised, than let down with his play so far. He's got plenty of room to improve so we should let him.

If Preston Smith is below average then 95% of our roster is dog doo doo.

Please go to Post #514 on this thread and listen to what Cooley had to say about Smith, particularly about how poorly he played the run in a game where he had a good showing as a pass rusher. That Cooley is a real hatter! Where does he get off wanting Smith to play the pass and the run in the same game?

Per source, the Redskins have withdrawn their latest offer to Junior Galette. Several teams remain in play including Cleveland and a reunion with Scot McCloughan who originally brought the edge rushing specialist to Washington. The Rams have also had discussions. #redskins

Skins understanding is that other teams would make him a better offer; yep, they have talked to Galette about the situation. Yes, Cleveland and the Rams. No offer has yet been made. Clearly has connections with both teams: McCloughan in Cle; McVay, Joe Barry in LA
