Good read. I am hopeful that this will largely blow over for Cain. Im with 12thman in that I think that this story more likely came from the GOP side then the Democrat’s side.

Regardless of what Cain did this whole thing stinks of a smear or “swiftboating” attack and I think most American’s are quickly feeling that way. Politico comes out with a story from about unnamed 3rd part sources that say Cain did something inappropriate and that they received 5 figure payouts. No names. No details on what he did. And no details on the payout which could be just a cost of doing business or indicative of an actual offense. Seriously sad journalism.

Yeah, just a few terrorists. No biggie, anybody could have done that. al-Qaeda has been crippled in the past three years. Libya? I'm sure that was pretty easy,too. Getting Arab, African, European countries, and the UN together on the same page, limited US involvement and costs. No biggie. Saving GM, yep, another so what. Just a million or so jobs saved.

You're right, he has nothing to run on, I think Cain or Romney would do a much better job.

To smear is to slander, to slander is to falsely accuse someone of something. Politico has every right to ascertain the truth and to ask questions. Clearly there is something that took place and there was a settlement of some kind. Cain and his team were given a chance to clarify the story 10 days prior to publication and they have managed to change their story several times within 24 hours of publication.

This is a legit story and we are all welcomed to think whatever we want.

So now that Obama is in office al-Qaeda is finally been crippled. Sorry but tell that to the parents of the 13 that just died or the special forces that we lost a few months back. You do know the death toll is rising not going down? While I agree al-qaeda has been crippled it was not done in just 3 years it has been done in 9. I will not knock Obama for his fight there but don't act like its all because of him.

You're missing the point. In your previous post you said Obama had a poor record to run on. In your second you diminished some of the successes in our effort to fight terrorism under this Administration.

Basically you're falling into the same trap Republican candidates will find themselves in come next Fall when they debate the President. On one hand Obama deserves no credit for progress, but on the other hand where results are obvious it's in spite of Obama.

Funny thing bout this Cain story, its not the Dems who cooked this up. This is Karl Rove-like "McCain's fathered a black child" smear campaign in South Carolina. Gotta love that Karl Rove, class act.

Yeah. For all his failings (and I believe them to be numerous), and despite my philosophical difference with his method of gov., I just don't see anyone being discussed by the Republicans as someone who will garner enough support to beat him.

I see a second trap for non-incumbents created by the "Apathy of the Center" - On one hand the majority of people are moderate (slightly left and right of center and philosophically tied to traditional liberal democracy - little "l", little "d") but are tired of the same old, same old. As a result, they don't want candidates representing the more extreme elements of the Reps or Dems (think Tea Party/OWS; Libertarian/Socialist) but view other centerist candidates as just "Obama in Red". As a result, any candidate from the right differentiating themselves from Obama is faced with the risk of differentiating too much and being seen as representative of the fringe OR not differentiating enough and being seen as just more of the same but in Red.

Obama's approval rating may be low, but I don't see anyone from the Rep. Party stepping out as someone who won't be viewed by the center as "same sh**, just in Red instead of Blue". Ultimately, I see it as an election of "Better the devil you know than the devil you don't".

For better or (more likely) for worse, I see four more years of Mr. Obama.

It's sad the US can't muster up a candidate worthy enough to be a half ass shitty President. Then again, the people that would be great candidates would never see the light of day due to political black balling and media favoritism.

It's simple as this. If you want to play ball on the big field, you better be prepared to keep the status quo.

Yeah i think 12thman alluded to this eelier and i completely agree with you guys. I also agree with saden that i dont think this is going to go away anytime soon. However, apparently Cain had his biggest fundraising day in the wake of these allegations.

The biggest problem i have, which is the same as what you and Saden mentioned ealier, is that he denied that he knew about a payment..... Come on man. I know its embarrassing but the US people are probably one of the most forgiving group of people out there, except when it comes to lying to cover something up.

Ive never voted before but was seriously considering voting if Cain got the nomination. Although I wear a voting promise ring I had considered letting my guard down and letting go of my political abstinence for the temptation of fair, transparent and equal taxes. Perhaps my political promiscuity came to a end before it ever started. I hope that didn’t creep anyone out……
