Re: 2012 Presidential Election (free for all edition)

Akin is a prime example it's so hard to be a Liberterian supporting the GOP. They just continue to **** up royally on social issues. Focus on the economy you idiots and leave everything else alone.

Though it's not like some good isn't coming out of this as it seems to be softening the pro-life stance of a lot of conservatives.

The problem isn't Akin, it's the entire Republican party. They pushed through 100s of abortion bills. They couldn't care less about the economy and that's the truth. Just look at all the bills they've sponsored.

Ironically enough I kind of agree with you. I guess right now I'm hoping that they've talked about controlling and reducing spending so much that theres no way they can get elected and not follow through with it unless their goal is to commit political suicide. Though this issue brings to light a very simple statement in regards to the GOP as best described by John McCain's daughter.

I won't say all, but it's a rather large amount of them that are doing it. You'll find it interesting on two particular people who sponsored a bill last year that would have redefined rape.

Missouri Rep. Todd Akin says he 'misspoke' on rape and pregnancy - latimes.com

Quote:
“Akin previously was the co-sponsor of a bill to redefine rape,” McCaskill said. “And it was recently reported that Akin opposed a state law against spousal rape because it might be used as a tool against husbands in a ‘messy divorce.’ ”

The “redefinition” of rape was contained in a federal bill co-sponsored by Akin in 2011 that would have redefined the conditions under which federal funds may be used to pay for abortion.

Currently, federal money may be used in cases of incest, rape or if the mother’s life is in danger. The “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortions Act” was co-sponsored by more than 200 Republicans, including Mitt Romney’s running mate, Rep. Paul D. Ryan. It would have changed the word “rape” to “forcible rape,” which abortion rights supporters feared would rule out paying for abortions in cases of statutory rape or when a victim is drugged or verbally coerced.

The bill passed with overwhelming Republican support in the House but failed in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Legislative proposal puts abortion rights supporters on alert

Quote:
In a sign of the potential confusion that could arise, one senior GOP aide said the wording was meant to prevent coverage for minors who engage in consensual sex that results in pregnancy. In some states, consensual sex involving minors is considered statutory rape.

It still blows my mind how a religious nutbag like this ended up on a science committee. My guess is so he can squash any science related funding that would somehow prove his precious religion wrong.

Rape trauma as barrier to pregnancy has no scientific basis - Yahoo! News

Amazing how one stupid set of sentences can ruin your entire career. Good. I'm glad and we really don't need guys like this governing our nation in any capacity.

Akin bows out of CNN appearance at the last minute - CNN.com

Now that his ass is being fried, I love how he's retracting all these words. He isn't sorry. He firmly believes the crap he said on Hannity's show as evident by the legislation he's tried to pass.

First on CNN: GOP prepares tough anti-abortion platform – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

Quote:
And Ryan, his vice presidential pick, has opposed exceptions for rape and voted alongside Akin in the House, though Ryan now says he defers to Romney's position on the matter.

Not sure why Ryan is condemning Alkin as he is good buddies with him on the abortion stance and feels that women that have been raped shouldn't be allowed abortions either.

Yet I believe in the death penalty. Huge 2nd amendment proponent, and feel we should seriously do something with immigration. Huge civil liberties proponent.

Apparently you just ignore all the other issues I"m conservative on. Far left is about as off-base as most of your comments. I lean left on issues, and right on other issues. Just visit the gun control thread to see that.

No no no you don't understand. Haven't you figured out that in politics there are only two teams. Team elephant and team donkey. You can't have varied nuanced and philosophically based opinions that cross the political spectrum. Its always us versus them.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election (free for all edition)

More often or not, I'm generally bashing the GOP side of it and it normally is for a good reason. It's because many of these loons simply give me (and others) the ammunition to do so. Corruption I recognize as being rampant among a majority of the politicians on both sides. Stupidity though, seems to consistently come from the right side of things and it generally involves religion.

If what Atkin said the other day didn't do it, check what this high ranking Republican official in MO had to say.

GOP official says God chooses to bless raped women with pregnancy - Detroit liberal | Examiner.com
Quote:
Barnes was quoted by The New York Times saying, "abortion is never an option." Barnes went on to biblically claim that, "If God has chosen to bless this person [the rape victim] with a life, you don’t kill it."

At what point do we start considering these people as mentally ill? What is the difference between nutjobs like this, and guys who take poison to ride off into a comet's trail?

I find it ironic that these same type of "republicans" chirping about how great democracy is, yet really are trying to institute a theocracy with their beliefs governing over people.

Before you get offended, I realize that not all conservatives and religious people are like this woman, but when you have the vast majority of the GOP proposing legislation that backs up what these nutjobs think, it says a lot about the people they represent.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election (free for all edition)

I'm convinced NC is an anarchist at heart. As such, he gets a little from column A (opinions of "liberals" within the liberal democratic political system), a little from column B (opinions of "conservatives" within the liberal democratic political system) and a whole lot from Bakunin.

IMHO - the terms "left" and "right" are becoming more and more archaic with the polarization of opinions and the erosion of the 18th century liberal democratic system established by the founders.

Even as recently as forty years ago, both left and right bought into the ideal of classic liberal democracy and the then existing political system as a means of reaching a solution to differences. Libertarianism, anarchism, communism and similar philosophies were considered fringe and incompatible with such a system.

Now, as our govt. gets larger, more intrusive and less responsive, frustration over the amount of corporate money and all things Washington is leading people to re-explore and buy into these once fringe political philosophies that de-emphasize the societal nature of civilization and play upon utopian desires.

All of this is just my musings on Tuesday morning. I have proof and/or links for none of it. Sorry for the digression.

Pretty much explains how I feel about our system, and its why I will be voting for her come November. Don't tell the Elephant crew running around here though, would shatter their thoughts of me being the liberal Obama supporter.

I think you should all listen to this woman. She has more knowledge and direction for this country than any politician out there.
