This may end up being a game of chicken between Trent and Bruce Allen.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

How much we paid will say a lot. If Penn's making $3M or $4M then it means Bruce thinks Trent truly may not show up, or that he might trade him. If Penn's making closer to $1M then it's just a realization that Christian isn't ready and Flowers isn't a realistic option (no shit Sherlock).

Either way I'm relieved to see the investment in the depth, no matter what.

Last year he missed 12 games due to injury, the year before 2 games. He is 36 years old, keep your fingers crossed.

Nice call.

Donald Penn is a legit Left Tackle who can help out if needed. Now let’s hope a Left guard can emerge as well as Trent can show up.

In a way, I think Bruce is now prepared to see if Trent is willing to miss game checks.

Yeah, it definitely undermines Trent's leverage. For one, now they have a plan B, and if that money went to Trent instead they'd have no plan B if he were to be injured again.

Honestly, they have all the leverage as long as Penn stays healthy. I don't see Trent sitting out the year, and I don't see him taking his frustration out in the locker room either.

Wouldn't it be nice is Christian emerges this year as well? Even as a solid swing tackle, it would make a hell of a difference for the future of this team.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

Let's not overstate things though, Donald Penn helps but he missed 12 games last year and he's 36. Even when he was on top of his game two years ago, he still wasn't Trent. Trent still has some leverage. But as the date gets closer to September eventually he'll have to make a decision, do I play for the $11M I'm contracted for, or do I give it up and sit out.

I still continue to think Trent will be back by week 1. Unless the Skins just paid a lot for Penn, in which case trade starts coming onto my radar.

Good post. I think Trent will be there week one. How many times over the years have we seen 'camp holdouts' that actually holdout into the regular season? 1? Maybe 2?

They start losing REAL paydays in the regular season and will NOT leave that money on the table.

Reading into the Penn deal is not unlike Alfred Morris back in Dallas. A 1 year deal with zero cap hit. A warm camp body who will be released when Zeke shows up week 1 of the regular season.

When (not if) Trent comes back, unless Penn wows the world to a rotational spot, will get released as well.

A placeholder is all they are.

Penn is for depth, if he has to start for a while we will be doomed

He's a one year player, at most. At 36 he is ancient as an OL player. I'd rather see Trent get a little more money and play this season. His "cancer" scare may have got him thinking about getting his payday now.

Amen to that.

This BA"We still want Trent" "We'd love to have Trent [in camp]" and this Redskins work out former Colts OL really points toward all this, including Penn signing, being depth and leverage moves.

Anyway it's the right to do.

Unless something has changed everybody did the same conditioning drills, including sprints, running laps, and the ropes, etc. Of course the big guys were given more time, but they still had to do them.

He’s a captain. He should be here setting the standard. He’s paid a premium sum to show up.

Definitely the right move. Our O line depth can't be too deep. They should see who is released at cuts, potentially trade opportunities. Injuries certainly were over the top, but there was also lack of legitimate depth there last 2 years.

Right though, lol...I have a feeling the rookies will be better, but with Geron still developing, we can't have too many projects as depth.
