Re: Hi-def

So here's a question then: I could go ahead and get a nice 27-36" HD-TV for a decent price? I'm looking at the WEGA myself.

Re: Hi-def

If you have the space for a CRT, then you could get one for pretty cheap (~$1000). If you don't need a high-end name brand, you could go even less than that.

The wega (pronounced V-ega) is the only way to go. You'll be happy for a long time with it.

If you have a den and can darken the place sufficiently an HD projector is excellent and relatively cheap.

projecting onto a black screen gives you better contrast too... i think sony is doing that now... not to mention a lot of projectors have computer hook ups now, which is always super nice.

Re: Hi-def

TMC - look at the widescreen WEGAs. It's worth the few bucks more...and get an extended warrenty. I bought mine on sale at Best Buy, and i've had a few minor problems with it, but they come out to the house to work on it, and it's been a blessing. Even if nothing's wrong with it, have a person come out towards the tail end of your warrenty to clean it up and make sure everything's working properly.

Re: Hi-def

Thanks for the advice guys. I DO have room for a CRT, I'm just wondering what kind of prices I can get (I DO want a name brand). Because as everyone is saying, HD is a religious type of experience and I want to watch at least a couple Skins games in it this year.

Re: Hi-def

Another question though, would you get wide screen? I've heard NO because then if you want to make sure no one is squished you have to have black lines on the sides of your picture.

Re: Hi-def

If you are getting HD, get widescreen. SD can be displayed with black bars on the sides or it can be stretched to fit the width. However, if you are getting HD (which is presented in 16:9 ratio), then you should get a screen that displays it properly (i.e., get a widescreen, which will show it in 16:9).

You wont have the squished look or the black bars when watching HD broadcasts and most of your wide screen dvd's will fit nicely unless they are in 1:853 (If I'm remembering the format ratio correctly) then you will have the bars on top and bottom, but it's a small price to pay.

I was at a recent meeting with the head technologist at a major entertainment and sports programming network... He was asked what he would buy if he had to spend his own money on a hd set... he said a 1080P Samsung DLP.
