https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/04/job-...-a-decade.html Layoffs hit their highest level for a first quarter in 10 years as 2019′s job market got off to a shaky start, according to a report Thursday from outplacement firm Challenger, Gary & Christmas. Total announced cuts hit 190,410, a 10.3 percent increase from the fourth quarter and 35.6 percent jump from the same period a year ago. The level was worst period overall since the third quarter of 2015 and the highest level for a first quarter since 2009 as the economy was still mired in the financial crisis. “Companies appear to be streamlining and updating their processes, and workforce reductions are increasingly becoming a part of these decisions, ” Andrew Challenger, vice president of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said in a statement. “Consumer behavior and advances in technology are driving many of these cuts.” https://www.axios.com/us-q1-layoffs-...de6f4ad41.html and........... https://www.businessinsider.com/trum...-losses-2018-8 President Donald Trump is waging a trade war on many fronts, with tariffs on steel, aluminum, Chinese goods, and more. While Trump argues that the tariffs will make the US economy stronger, so far the duties are leading to layoffs. Small businesses across the US are grappling with the increased cost of goods, and some of them are resorting to layoffs to save money.

Re: How Republican(Democratic) are you
Employment numbers can be absolutely meaningless and interpreted many different ways. I think it was the early 2000's manufacturing companies where I lived cut their work week to 32 hours from 40 instead of laying off 20% of the work force. Even though it shows no job losses those workers are working 20% less than they want to. Also it seems in a lot of service industry minimum wage jobs people are getting very few hours these days. At one time my girlfriend's adult son was working 3 places and still often not totaling 40 hours a week. He was working inside one pizza place, delivering pizzas for another, and working 1-2 days a week at a video game store.

Re: How Republican(Democratic) are you
G1 is Republican... WTF happened while I was away?
Does BuffaloBob have an afro and a dashiki now? Cred, I'm fascinated by the chartme test. My original score was 60/40 Rep. But I was able to get to 100% Republican by selecting Extremely disgusted for everything. According to chartme: Republicans are germaphobes who refuse to eat chocolates shaped like an asshole. Democrats change their underwear once a week and blow up condoms for fun. |
