Re: The Defense Only Thread
phillips, Compton and brouton don't make impact plays.
Cravens made plays right away. I can live with his rookie mistakes if he is going to make plays. Same goes for fuller. |

Re: The Defense Only Thread
1) I'm surprised nobody's mentioning Breeland's performance.
I really like this guy, if I wasn't so broke I'd have bought his jersey already... BUT he really seems to have lost confidence, and CB is a confidence position. Just look at Norman, I was worrying all the noise around him would get his head out of the game... but he seems to feed from the noise, his play's outstanding, and partly so just because he thinks he's the best... Long story short: I truly think coaches need to find some adjustments to help Breeland out. Either put Norman on the best WR, or give him safety help, I don't know, but take some pressure away from him, so he can build some confidence back and be the great CB he can become. 2) One thing I think coach Barry is doing good, is using different personnel: 3-4-4, 2-5-4, 2-4-5 etc... Cravens in the mix, sometimes I don't know if he's playing sort of nickel corner or linebacker. Overall I feel like this is a good try at palliating our weakness at D-line.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
regarding Breeland, Barry isn't using him the right way. Did Barry look at any of Breeland's past games against Bryant? If he did then he'd know that having him play 10 yards off on isn't the right way to use him. It looked like he had him playing some shitty soft zone half ass coverage. The way Haz had him playing was in Bryant face jamming him playing tight man to man. That is what he does best, not what I saw Sunday. This is another example of Barry's pure incompetence.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
If I recall properly my draft wish list for the first three rounds was DT/DT/C
No necessarily in that order. We'd be sitting far prettier right now if we got that. Even better for next year.....

Another dagger (not really in our power) but we missed out on Ryan Kelly in this years draft. The Scott M. honeymoon is coming to an end and we need to realize he has had made some mistakes. I still think he has us on the right path. I will say his free agent "game" is very very weak.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
McC has done a great job drafting players, look how many are in the roster. If we are not bitching about the DL then we would be bitching about the OL. Can't fix everything in one year.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
I know it may suck right now but gotta keep the focus on the long run. SM didn't come here to do a quick reload. He's trying to build for long term success.

What frustrates the shit out me so far in 2016 is the lack of doing the basics right. Our zone defense is the perfect example and we suck at it. You play zone up to a certain point in the play, then cover a man. I am seeing receivers get released, left wide open, at the worst time so the defender can cover an empty part of the field. Releasing your zone to cover a receiver right before the qb throws it is basic football. On a pass play the goal is to cover players, not form a pretty pattern of defenders on the field. That is shitty coaching. |

11th ranking for highest percent of blitz per drop back (32.57%) 3rd ranking for creating pressure off a blitz (seattle and car were 1 and 2) 22nd ranking for pressure with out blitzing https://www.profootballfocus.com/team-blitzing/ I dont know about this year's stats to date. I was surprised we had such a high and effective blitz number for last year.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
Next year I'd want our defensive starters to be:
CB - Norman and Breeland S - Hall and Cravens OLB - Smith and Kerrigan MLB - Draft Pick/FA and Draft Pick/FA DE - Murphy and Baker NT - Draft Pick/FA We will also need players for depth in the front 7 and work on finding a replacement for Hall. I'd say this year or next is his last here. So that's 3 new starters plus depth guys. There is a lot of work to do on D still. Hopefully we have 1 hell of an off season and draft.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
This. I think most of us under exaggerated, myself included, how many holes were on this team when he got here. It takes time to build a great 53 man roster and get them to play well together.
