I don't know. I mean I love Helu as a big play threat. God knows we need someone who can take a handoff all the way to the endzone. However as I said before I honestly believe that Shanny likes Royster better.

My guess is the reason Helu was drafted first was because the front office felt like Helu had more teams gunning for him on draft day and in the end they wanted to get both Helu and Royster in the same draft, hence the need to get Helu first.

Of course that is all just a guess on my part but after hearing Shanny talking about Royster it just feels like he was the favorite among the two backs that were picked. Obviously a guy with 4.3 speed and 6.0 yards per carry is going to have more value on draft day then an engine that could type back that does everything good and nothing great.

I think you're right here. Royster wasn't being looked at and talked to by us a lot, where as Helu wasn't really even mentioned. Plus I feel like Helu was the great college back that more one dimensional, and Roysters the multi-dimensional still has more to show (Arian Foster for example) type of back.

Dude. We're in a lockout. I'm simply moving at the speed of our legal system. What's a week between friends?

Because of Smootsmack's impatience, I am doing the roster that I would build in May, not my predictions for what will happen. Those predictions will come as soon as I know the free agency rules. For right now, assumption is: 2010 rules to player movement.

Quarterbacks (3): Rex Grossman, Scott Tolzien (R), Pat Devlin (R)

Runningbacks (5): Roy Helu Jr. (R), Keiland Williams, Evan Royster (R), Henry Hynoski (R), Mike Sellers

Wide Receivers (6): Anthony Armstrong, Malcolm Kelly, Leonard Hankerson, Brandon Banks, Terence Austin, Aldrick Robinson

I do think Niles Paul is a better prospect than Austin, but Paul's best chance of making the roster is Kelly getting hurt again and being released.

Tight Ends (3): Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen

Offensive Linemen (8): Trent Williams, Kory Lichtensteiger, Will Montgomery, Erik Cook, Jammal Brown, Stephon Heyer, Clint Oldenburg, Mike Williams

Defensive Linemen (8*): Anthony Bryant, Adam Carriker, Vonnie Holliday, Jarvis Jenkins (R), Albert Haynesworth, Ma'ake Kemoeatu, Ian Williams (R), Darrion Scott*

*I have Albert Haynesworth on the opening day roster. I think he's traded by Week 4. My player totals equal 54, but D. Scott is going to be a post-Haynesworth pickup.

Linebackers (9): London Fletcher, Chris Wilson, Brian Orakpo, Lorenzo Alexander, HB Blades, Ryan Kerrigan, Perry Riley, Rob Jackson, Markus White

Defensive Backs (9): DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Barnes, LaRon Landry, OJ Atogwe, Phillip Buchanon, Reed Doughty, DeJon Gomes, Chris L. Rucker (R), Brandyn Thompson (R)

Specialists (2): Graham Gano, Josh Bidwell

Long Snapper (1): James Dearth

You gutted the team!

What happened to Torain?

If Kelly is our #2, we're doomed.

2 undrafted rookie QBs?

No replacement for Rogers at CB?

Nice O-line.

Man, I knew you were a Redskins pessimist but this is ridiculous. I do like that you replaced Rabach and Sundberg at least.

I don't think you can gut a team that won ten games in two seasons. I think the phrase you're looking for is getting rid of some bad contracts without adding new bad contracts. Which is the obvious focus in 2011. Assuming the Redskins are actually on the right track.

I wouldn't be shocked to see the Redskins try Ryan Torain at Fullback this year. It's something that Shanahan did with Mike Anderson, a player who he really liked, rather than release him. In this scenario, I have them not getting rid of Mike Sellers because he's still really valuable on special teams. But that's really all Sellers does these days so Torain --> Sellers is pretty defensible.

Anyway, that OL I have up there isn't exactly reaching for the stars in 2011, but who would you acquire that would improve on that situation, and what would you give up to get them?

Remember, there is a cost -- potentially a significant one -- in trying to be less bad in 2011.

I have one adjustment to make to the roster I previously predicted: I think the Redskins sign Shaun Rogers and release Ma'ake Kemoeatu.

I now think this because I looked at QB Hit numbers from 2010, and no interior DT hit the QB more times than Shaun Rogers. That includes 4-3 tackles. Rogers didn't always get the sack, but the Redskins need a nose tackle who can put the quarterback on the ground, and Rogers can do that.

Re: Predict the 2011 Opening Day 53 Man Roster

I think the FO is in re-tooling mode not a re-building modes so my moves will reflect what I think would be the best moves for them following the somewhere in between win now and re-build mandate:

FB: Darrell Young, Mike Sellers

TE: Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen

WR: Santana Moss, Anthony Armstrong, Malcolm Kelly, Leonard Hankerson, Terrence Austin,

OL: Trent Williams, Kory L., Samson Satele, Will Montgomery, Matt Light, Selvish Capers, Oldenburg, Eric Cook

DL: Adam Carriker, Anthony Bryant, Cullen Jenkins, Jeremy Jarmon, Jarvis Jenkins, Darion Scott, Kedrick Golston, Chris Neild

LB: Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan,, London Fletcher,Perry Riley, Chris Wilson, HB Blades, , Robert Henson, Lorenzo Alexander

DB: DeAngelo Hall, Chris Houston, Kevin Barnes, Byron Westbrook

Re: Predict the 2011 Opening Day 53 Man Roster

The funny thing about this is: DeAngelo Hall is a far better man coverage player than a zone coverage player. It's not even close. He's a perennial pro bowl talent in man to man, and a consistent non-performing coverage liability in zone. But if given the choice, Hall would only ever play zone coverage because he likes the 1:100 chance of getting an errant pass thrown to him and creating points and field position out of the return. And too many DCs in recent memory have given Hall a choice.

Re: Predict the 2011 Opening Day 53 Man Roster

What can I say? Scouts Inc seems to strongly agree with GTripp.

Quote:
Comment: He is a veteran cornerback who is more flash than he is player. He has the physical tools to be great but usually just plays at an average to above-average level. He is an excellent athlete for the position. He is excellent in man coverage. He is at his best when challenged by the better receivers in the NFL. He can shut down the opponent's top receiver when his mind is right. He is not very good in zones. He is not a very good technician and can get lazy with his techniques. He does not break on the ball quickly when playing off. He has excellent balance and body control. He does not attack versus the run. He has a ton of talent but does not consistently play up to his abilities.
The thing I've noticed though is that as loose as Hall plays, not to mention games where he gives up pretty sizable gains the defense was still able to prevent opposing teams from putting up points. Most notably in the Green Bay game where Halls cushion almost set up a game winning field goal for the Pack.

It seems though like he played more conservative during the second half of the season. As you can see in his stat sheet, the amount of tackles dropped off considerably during the second half. Probably a product of the defense playing better overall but also possible is the fact that Hall played tighter.

Also a funny stat about Los. Guy has 48 Pass Deflections the last 3 years. 48! Can you imagine how amazing that guy would be if he could catch?
