The argument players often make when it comes to their contracts, be it taking a pay cut, settling for less money, or simply restructuring, is that they're negotiating not only for themselves but also for future players. If, for example, Ty Law (arguably a top 5 cornerback) agrees to settle for less money what does it do for his fellow union members? Especially cornerbacks who hope to negotiate new contracts soon. Someone like Fred Smoot for example.

How sincere this argument is I don't know, but I know that it's often brought up

Offiss, read the article. It will help you understand Ty Law a lot better. I don't think he's being an ass at all. It's not a tiny pay cut they want him to take either. I think they said 18 million, which is way less than his current contract. I think he'll make over 18 mil these last two years! Well, not quite, but still.

Johnny, I understand that money isn't the end all be all of existance, but everyone here admits it's quite a luxury to have. These guys are bartering for their families future with money, sure they have money, but if they get more there's a better chance to invest it correctly. These guys work all year basicly straight through. Sure, they get vacations now and then, and they love what they do, but that doesn't make it any less grueling! Not to mention, it only takes 1 play for you to never see the field again. You better get the money when you have a chance.

Hell, look at our own Dexter Manly. A college degree for football players means nothing. He went through (or at least part) of college and couldn't even read. They learn football, nothing else.

Like the man said...he has to eat. Believe me the more money you have, the more money you don't have. You'll first buy a big house, and then a big boat...family is asking for money from left to right because you are loaded so you give them some. Nice Jag, let me buy it. Wow, this diamond is phat...let me cop that. 10 million might seem like a lot, but once you have that kind of money your living standards go up....way up. All of a sudden 10 million seems like nothing. 10 million is nothing man ...it is chump change. You can't even open up a nice movie theater or a motel with that kind of money nowadays. Sure you could put that money and invest it but come on, if you have never had that kind of money before you are bound to spend it.

Yea from what I have come up with on a couple of show's is that the guy is a pretty decent guy and a real team player, and belichik I guess stuck his foot in his mouth man to man with law and now they are back tracking, apparently belichik didn't believe law was capable of playing corner as well as he did down the stretch, but they don't want to pay him as such, from what I have heard he also went to management 2 year's ago offering to restructure to make sure the team was able to keep brady, he sound's like a real stand up guy and a winner, I stand corrected on this one I didn't know new england was asking him to take a pay cut, as well as some of the other particular's, my bad! I hope he win's out now!

Ug, after reading my quote I need to read my posts before I post them. There are so many grammar mistakes it's like I'm back in elementary school! Hurray for tense switching.

Anyhow, I really like Ty Law and wish him the best, but I think NE is trying to really work him over here. I hate NE and hope Ty gets out and they don't even make the playoffs, which I think with Ty they might not even make. They really aren't that talented and I'm not a fan of their formula. If they didn't have the coaching staff they have those bunch of no names would be at the bottom of their division.
