Your john boat would still float, but I'm guessing the engine would not work since it also probably has electronics. But you're the guy who thinks all his gas powered stuff will work, so you probably won't have any oars. And if your engine fails? Oh, just take it to the shop for repair! The point most overlooked is simplicity. In this type of event you would want items that are durable, and can be repaired in the field. Chainsaws and boat motors don't fall into this category.

Re: The Solar 'Katrina' Storm That Could Take Our Power Grid Out For Years
The author was talking about a storm that caused a surge and blew out the electric grid. There is not going to be an event, short of nuclear war, that causes an EMP the size necessary to blow out personal electronics. If we went back to the stone age, certainly a lot of people would die and more would turn to savagery to survive. Just ain't happening in this decade (again barring some man made holocaust like nuclear war)

While I think it is very unlikely, it does seem possible that solar events could affect simple electronics on the surface of the earth (i.e.: integrated circuit boards):

No, but if the s**t goes down I'll need people familiar with hard work to get things going again. IE water purification, food production, distribution, sanitation, security, civics, heath, etc. You know, all the things that people used to know how to do for themselves.
