Lets not kid ourselves, our current RT's are either washed up (Jansen) or unproven (Heyer). Shaffer can give us 2-3 good productive yrs, and then we can draft a younger RT. If we sign him, that's 1 less need we have to worry about going into the draft.

I would certainly take a look at KS if I where the Skins quickly, as I don't think he will be on the market long.

IMO he could be a huge upgrade over what we have now at RT, and this is going to be one if not the most important holes left to fill. Still relatively young at 29, good size, doesn't miss games, or have injury problems. And is a solid performer.

I hear we have needs at tackle.
Can he play strongside linebacker or defensive end too?

Like draft Alex Mack?
Samuels
Dockery
Mack
Thomas
Shaffer
Oh yeah.
I could live with that. And JC would probably live a lot longer with that.

That sounds pretty good; however I'm pretty sure if we sign Shaffer, we will go on defensive side and draft LB or DE..

Maybe. But you've got to admit that would be a hell of a line.

Ditto... it's also tempting because we could let Rabach go and save a pile of cash.

... if we sign a legit RT in FA, which I'm thinking the FO will, then trading back to get Mack and a LB is best case scenario. But I still doubt this works. I think we're stuck at 13.

I think they would like to. But I wonder if given a choice who he would rather play for?

I agree with this. And, as Smootsmack pointed out, the Browns aren't trying to get rid of him. They want him back, presumably for less money.

I say unless the bidding gets too high, grab him. One less slot to worry about. I like the idea of a drafted tackle but he is not that old and we have many holes to fill without many good FA choices or many draft choices.

I would go for it if there were no cap concerns, but it sounds like this guy is a mixed bag anyway. Why sign a guy that needs help often with a speedy pass rush. Draft a stud that is willing to learn and can play either side if called upon to do so. I mean the frigging Browns released him. They are on hurting unit also!!!!!!

It's great that we have peops on the wp that can provide the kind of insight that comes from inside of an article!

I don't know about this guy, but if he could compete for a starting job at RT & we can afford it, sign him.

I disagree w/those that say sign him & then we can draft on D. Even if he's signed, there is still a major long term need at OT. We should draft the best prospect of the OT/LB/DE pool that is available IMO.
