Good points, but then again finding those late round gems is one of the reasons Vinny is criticized- i.e. his willingness (some may call it eagerness) to trade picks for veteran players.

You know, I was thinking: Horton's interceptions may be hiding his overall play on the field, while Carlos Rodgers' failure to catch interceptions are hiding his. Maybe we can get Dr. Andrews to perform a hand transplant between the two?

I agree wholeheartedly Matty. From what I've read, everytime they walk off the practice field Horton is asking Doughty questions because he does'nt have as much experience. Horton has given up big plays too. Like his blown coverage on Witten. I'm not a Doughty "lover", but like you said he does serve a purpose here. I don't "think" Doughty is ever going to make the pro bowl, and I would'nt be surprised if Horton ended up making a few of them. But why have him out there all the time if he's going to blow coverages like he did with Witten? Is'nt that the complaint about Doughty? I can't wait for Horton to understand his assignments and be the starter because I do believe he is an upgrade and has better skills than Doughty. I don't know, I always thought it was better to learn the system before you start. Doughty was kinda thrown in there because of what happened to Sean. Horton has a great opportunity here and I'm sure he's going to make the most of it. I like the guy a lot. I just don't understand the animosity for Doughty. Especially since Horton is getting more playing time and Doughty is helping him out.

there's nothing like learning at our and the 49ers expense. it's about time he stopped screwing it up. it's probably more his scouts then him anyways.

thread related---horton is benefitting from sound defensive coaching, and being surrounded by smart talent.

Sure Horton has made mistakes, but he makes up for them by making plays. I love how everybody is using the vet excuse for Doughty saying that he knows the defense blah blah blah. Doughty was benched in the Arizona game and the Dallas game for blown coverages so that's a pretty lame excuse to use. So the difference is: Horton makes up for his mistakes by making plays, Doughty makes mistakes and that's it. Doughty has had his chance to prove that he can be a starter on this team and he has failed. Doughty is about to lose his job to a rookie and to me that doesn't speak well for him at all. Doughty had his chance he failed, let's give Horton and Moore their chance to prove themselves now.

Did Horton win the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week Award?

I love the kid. Reed should be our special teams all-star. But the boy can't cover. Stop trying to make him cause he can't. Throw him in there to blitz cause he can tackle. Other than that, Horton, Hamilton, or Moore need to get in there. It can't be but so hard anyway. Laron Landry erases problems by himself.

Don't forget Heyer (undrafted rookie free agent, Maryland) who beat out Jon Jansen. Guys like this are the real gems.

Vinny has not been the sole decision maker regarding player acquisition. From what I understand it's typically been a 3 headed monster of Snyder, Cerrato and the head coach. It seems to me that now Vinny's voice might be a little stronger than it had been in the past especially with the influence of a certain famous head coach. The Jason Taylor deal might have been a little pricey in terms of draft picks, but the way he justified it was #1, we lost two defensive ends in one day and the move was necessary, and #2, your getting a six time pro bowler who they feel is still very much at the top of his game and your trading picks which are not guaranteed to pan out at all. With the exception of Horton, the jury is still out on this years draft but if the past few years drafts were any indication were looking good for the future.
