One question though - could the FO have at least tried to place the franchise or transition tag on Dockery so we could have at least gotten some draft picks in return or were the Skins too restricted by the cap?
franchise dock? lmao

I'll wait to see how they do with the draft before I heap any praise upon them.

As far as free agency goes, I believe it's been more a testament to their inability to do anything insane as opposed to their desire to do something like that.

Matty - I agree with you - I just hate our team losing guys without getting anything in return. Oh well - maybe Puchillo will fill in admirably or we trade down and put a rookie in who surprises us.

This doesn't make any sense? Whether if you're one to look at something half full or half empty, you can't deny the fact that the front office has done a good job with free agency this offseason. We all know what Fred Smoot is capable of, and he is a definite upgrade for our secondary. And Fletcher is a 2-3 year upgrade for our team and his contract reflects that fact. I'd say they do deserve some credit for signing guys who fit well in our defense and these upgrades reflect a win now attitude, which is what the fans want as well.

If you want to do high-fives over London Fletcher and Fred Smoot, go right ahead. I'm comfortable with them, but let's see how they pan out first, that's all I'm saying.

With our cap situation, there wasn't a whole the front office could do.

Not sure what you mean, after all we could have re-signed Dockery even at that crazy number. We could have made some other crazy moves too, if this front office wants to do something, they will. We could have easily dropped guys like Wynn, Daniels, Hall, Patten, etc., cleared a bunch of cap room and went to town in free agency.

We're definitely seeing a much more cautious approach.

The point is, if we had gobs of cap space, wouldn't it be more of the same?

The fact that they didn't re-sign Dock doesn't surprise me. Retaining their current "core" guys doesn't really fit their pattern.

Like I said, had they wanted to they could have cleared alot more room and went to town.

Dock wasn't worth $49M, so core guy or not I don't see how anyone can hate on the fact they let him walk.

If signing a first round choice like Carter last year and giving him a 10mil signing bonus was stupid then what would it be to give our 5th best offensive lineman a 18 million dollar bonus?

Also, who decided that every guy that starts has been identified as a core redskin? I think there are "core redskins" and then there are "some that could possibly become core redskins". Dockery was almost a core guy, but if we had to lose a lineman, I'm glad was him and not one of the other guys. I'd like to see if we could get Wade and have him move inside. If it doesn't work, he is still excellent depth.

I would dispute that he was the fifth best offensive lineman. He was also the youngest, and was beginning to receive accolades from Joe Bugel. Whatever. To compare Dockery's value to Andre Carter is pretty vicious if you ask me. Maybe he would have been worth that $18 million bonus. I guess we'll see.

And who the hell knows what a "core" Redskin is. That's cryptic Gibbs-speak that apparently doesn't hold a lot of water. That's why I used quotation marks. I will say this, being part of a line that was fourth in the league in sacks given up with really strong running game makes every member of the offensive line that pretty valuable.

We'll see how wise and all-knowing this front office was when we see the production of the offensive line in 2007.

some people just like to rag on the skins front office, regardless of the moves they make.

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....

The FO certainly deserves negative reviews based on the past, but I do think that you have to be encouraged by what we've seen so far. Sure, I'd have loved to see us sign Dock last year, but the jury was still out on him getting HALF what he just got, and I give credit to his agent for playing the market well.
I'll be really convinced the FO has changed if we trade down & grab some extra picks.
I understand why people are still skeptical, this isn't the first time we've shown restraint when we didn't have the cap space, remember when Samari Rolle was on the market in 05?
But gibbs' sounds like they've learned their lesson, and J. clayton said the same thing on espn. I'll wait till after the draft to see how much they've changed, but I like what I see so far. Letting Davis walk was a great non-move, especially since the Boys paid way too much for him.

Would have been nice to see Davis next to CS, but not at that price tag!

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....

all OL are grouped together for the franchise tag, so any OL would get 9.4mill or so under that tag this year, which would have really crippled the skins ability to do anything.
