This might set the Chargers back a couple of years. Sucks for Marty. That and all the good head coaching candidates are gone.

If you were going to fire him, why would you wait until all the good coaches already have jobs? I wonder if they have an ace up their sleeve?

On an related note, next offseason should be full of head coaching candidates - Schottenheimer, Fisher, Cowher, Grimm, and several high-profile coaches should be available should Gibbs decide to retire.
fisher won't be available. the titans (any everyone else) realize how good is his, and i seriously doubt they let him walk.

This a bad move by the Chargers. Their best chance at getting a coach with experience now is to go after offensive/defensive coordinators of other teams. I don't think any job is more perfect than the SD job. They have youth, talent and great weather. I hope they don't go after Saunders or Williams.

It's a horrible move. It sends a terrible message to the players and administration. #1 seed in AFC and fired. Silly not to give MartyBALL another year. He's got the best team in football right now. I think the Chargers are idiots, but the only way to save the day is hire Chucky. He'll slide in there and win on someone else's hard work....

Marty will do one year in TV - bringing his bubbling personality to ESPN, nost likely, and then I believe he'll go to...

The Cleveland Browns.

Different ownership since his last trip there. Only one playoff appearance since his departure. I'm sure Cleveland would prefer to lose in the playoffs every year than not sniff it.

PFT laid out what the clearly alluded to as speculation but it makes total sense.

I'd bet Carroll is the coach by Friday.

I don't think that is true. You have never had a boss or another employee or a friend of a friend that you just could not stand to be around? Sometime people clash and if your the owner you do not have to put up with it. I think now is a great time for them to make the change instead of giving it one more year. They hire a new coach and he can bring his D & O coaches which they have to replace anyways. I think it all comes down to Schottenheimer's record in the playoffs and that he and the owner do not get along.

Bill Parcells and the Chargers anyone?

Boy, did Jim Mora jump the gun this year. He could have been eligible for no less than three jobs had he waited.

He's still eligible for any HC job that wants him.

Seems pretty unfair to fire Schott because he wanted to give guys like Manusky a chance to better his career. Really a shame for all Chargers fans.
