It's not hate for Griffin. He's a good player, no doubt.

But to be in the running for the best defensive tackle in the history of the Washington Redskins? Not a chance in hell.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Defensive Tackle

I was thinking Haynesworth may be the closest DT we've had to Butz. Butz could do it all, including sacking the QB. If AH can have the impact Butz had, I'll be one happy camper.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Defensive Tackle

Dave Butz was a Warren Sapp and the man played forever. Truly a 'Skin Hall of Famer and with Diron Talbert a close second.

Correction: Warren Sapp was a Dave Butz. Butz was the first huge DT in football and the one to set the standard to today's DT's. When George Allen got him from the Cards it was huge.

I was also going to mention Daryl Gardener who came from the Dolphins. He was a beast for the season we had him. He was playing for a new contract but he had some back issues. Denver signed him after the 1 monster season and he never played for them cause his back was injured again. We did do something smart by not resigning him for big money.

I was at the game. Amazing feeling. Butz all the way.

Someone asked which modern day DT you could compare him to, well it's hard to say. Butz wasn't exactly a sack machine or the most dynamic player. He certainly wasn't flamboyant and celebrated following each play like today's prima donnas. But to me his helmet told the story. Until this very day, and I'm sure the NFL probably uses some special coating or seal, but I've never seen a football helmet so scared and battered like Dave Butz' helmet. It was scary.

If I had to name one player that resemble Dave Butz in terms of style though, no one really jumps out to me.

Diron Talbert was the Dancing Bear & when I was about 12 I loved the Over The Hill Gang. But the best D line the Skins ever had was Manley,Mann,Grant & Butz made it all happen. I remember Madden saying that nobody runs on these guys.

Gotta love the sir mix a lot reference!

I am shocked this is even thread worthy. I would think if a poll was done here, Butz would be 80% or so. (of course you are going to have the trollers and idiots voting for others which would reduce Butz's dominance) I just don't see anyone in the same league as Butz, he's the dominant winner.
