I am still confused on what they were trying to do. Reminded me of Jim Zorn.

I don't think its supposed to come under center like that. Basically the punter is supposed to stay back and take the direct snap and throw it up. It's like a punt version of an onside kick. It also should never be tried against NFL defenses.

I completely thought about the Jim Zorn play as well.

That mistake essentially cost Pagano the game because it allowed the Pats to go up 2 score. Made them one dimensional

That is what I thought but the punter just takes the snap and waits to get tackled. That is the part that I was confused by.

Yea I am surprised NFL teams still try that kind of fake.

And Just like Zorn that decision might be a big part of the reason Pagano loses his job, even though Zorn was already on the way out.

It looks like they executed it wrong, because the punter moved over with the rest of the line. Strangely we executed it correctly(extra blocker and a long snap to allow time for the downfield action), and a good heave scores:

You can watch it and see that no one stayed behind the center at first.

Bottom line to all NFL coaches, never ever let your ST coach trick you into this.

Basically, Belichick >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>zorn>>>>>>>Rich Kotie>Gruden>a turd in the road>>>>Chuck Pagano.

Belicheat of course was ready for the Colts to implode:

"We expected this to be a gadget game in the kicking game -- the onside kick, some kind of fake, fake punt, fake field goal," Patriots coach Bill Belichick added. "We didn't know what the play was going to be, obviously, but they went on the swinging gate type play and we went over to the overshift and made sure we covered the inside part and we reacted well to it. So it was a heads up play by our punt return unit."

the afc south is horrible, Colts should be running away with the division.

Re: Around the NFL - Week 6

I feel like the swinging gate never works. Ever.

The only time I've seen it work was during a pop warner football game, and I mean, obviously its going to work on some 9 and 10 year olds. Oh and I did see a youtube clip of some college team using it successfully.

Can someone tell me why (and I'm sure it's obvious) why it works below the college level and not in the NFL?

Re: Around the NFL - Week 6

It's funny to see Riley Cooper getting open downfield a few times a game, but supposedly we don't have any WR's capable of running routes beyond 6 yards, despite have Ross who is a burner, and an O-line that for the most part has been protecting the passer pretty well.
