Re: Snow totals?

2nd band of snow i mentioned earlier has just moved in. Very heavy snow now. I don't know how long we will have this 2nd, "mini storm", but at this rate it looks like it could do an inch an hour. Stuck a tape measure beside driveway again and it is just over 21 inches...

Re: Snow totals?

yeah, just finished shoveling 14" of snow... it was dry, but the light/constant rain started to weigh it down a bit.

now it's snowing again (3-4" they say), but this is the heavy slushie stuff that'll ice up on you.

NoVA's handled plowing/snow removal really well since the one year (2003?) where they basically cancelled half the school year.

Some good comments and insight from other northerners living in NC.

So, this is how Raleigh, NC handles 2.5" of snow : pics
See even in in va we don't have that situation really. It's called pretreating and just about everyone north of NC does it because we have to. It keeps that hill from becoming a luge track. NC isn't prepared for such activities since they need it so infrequently.

Re: Snow totals?

Came into work this morning, they did a really good job on the highways and main roads but my neighborhood/side roads are all terrible, just covered with ice everywhere. Hopefully it warms up during the day and melts this layer of ice off.

Re: Snow totals?

our 2nd snow fall was the slushie kind (bad), but it must have been warm enough to rain, cause there was only 1/2" or so when i woke up, which is pretty forgettable.

Re: Snow totals?

we are supposed to get 4 more inches tonight, and maybe 2 tomorrow...It is crazy. The snow is almost unrelenting.

The good news is, by the end of next week, we are supposed to have sustained temperatures in the upper 60's and i believe one day cracks 70

Re: Snow totals?

Last dumping was a foot of snow. Previous to that, about 8 inches. We had a few other smaller 1-4" snows between those.

I measured 25" deep by my driveway, which is looking more like a tunnel now. Some of that depth was from blowing but most fell right there from from the sky.

Only lost power once, was lucky.

Re: Snow totals?

Forecasting right now another big snow event for next Friday - Saturday. There is a guy in Edinburg, VA, that runs a weather site from his house - no joke. He has equipment on the roof of his garage and is supposedly a self-trained meteorologist. His record for predicting snowfall this year is something like 12 - 1. The big 2 foot snow last week, he predicted 10 days before it happened. He is predicting another major event for next weekend, so we will see what happens...

Re: Snow totals?

Here is Capital Weather Gang (the Washington Post weather blog) says:
Quote:
In terms of snow chances, we see two in the next 10 days.
The first, in the Tuesday into Wednesday period, is probably no big deal. It’s a weak clipper-system – with limited moisture – approaching from the west. Not only is moisture likely lacking, but temperatures may only be marginally cold enough for snow – so accumulation prospects aren’t great.
The second snow chance is the one most are paying attention to… and that’s in the February 28 to March 1 time frame. The European model showed a huge snowstorm in its simulations yesterday – but backed off this idea some today, keeping the storm more to our south. The GFS model also keeps the storm to our south. It’s too early to write the storm off or sound an alarm.
10 days is a long time in weather forecasting. Hopefully it dissipates well before then
