The Commanders are not going to exercise DE Chase Young’s fifth-year option, per sources.

@NickiJhabvala
Worth noting that Ron Rivera has a track record of paying guys after career seasons. Look no further than Daron Payne. His fifth year was exercised, but the team didn’t extend him before last season. And then he had 11.5 sacks.

Young could still get paid.

I'll just go ahead and mark Chase Young down as being our franchise tag player in 2024.

But yeah, definitely should look at drafting an edge rusher, even if late in the draft just in case.

Hopefully this is good news for extending Sweat. Maybe they made their choice that Sweat is the better of the two. Otherwise, we are losing 1 of them next year. Can't franchise tag both of them. Also, would be pretty crazy to sign both of them to huge deals after this season.

Gotta say, this is very surprising.

The timing of this 'source' telling Nicki this now is interesting. Bet your life they're taking calls for Chase tomorrow night during round 1.

Extend Sweat and trade Young might be the best option at this point. I'd love to be a fly on the wall internally, about the discussions on Chase.

Having both be FA's after this season could be untenable.

A possible 3rd round comp pick is not good enough for the No. 2 overall pick or a guy you traded back-up into the 1st to get. If we aren't keeping both, we need to get something good for them (or 1 of them).

He's still the kind of talent where, if you believe a recovery will happen, he could be worth a 1 plus to you. There will also be teams that wouldn't touch him because of the unknown with the knee.

But it just takes one out of 31 teams and so they'll surely take calls.

I think trading him might be the right move if you can get the right deal.

Re: You picking up Chase Young 5th Year Option?

I also think it's quite possible, and I'm just speculating here, that Ron doesn't think Chase is much of a team guy.

Talked about maturity a few years ago, talked about getting guys to buy in and not freelance, talked about how his recovery last year came down to him trusting the knee and it wasn't the doctors holding him back.

I'm not sure Ron thinks he can count on Chase to put the team first. I think Ron thinks that if Chase were considering the team he would have gotten on the field sooner last year.

Again just speculating but I can see a trade being an extremely real possibility tomorrow night.

I'd absolutely trade Chase for a 1st rounder right now, even pick 31, straight up. Just based on the questions and the position the team will be in at DE after the season if nothing is done. Then draft another guy to have on a rookie deal again (w/ any pick, not necessarily that one).

IMO we would need to anyway as it would be extremely difficult to keep both Sweat and Chase, so chances are we are going to need to replace one of them either way and getting someone drafted and ready for that time makes sense. They have looked at quite a few Edge players from what i've read.

I agree, I'd trade him for a 1st or 2nd right now.. We can find a solid Edge rusher , lets be real the Eagles and Bengals win every yr with average DE'S

Per Keim, the coaches love Montez Sweat.

Also, the more I think about it, the more I'm not surprised at this move. When Ron took over the team, his 2020 draft was based on whatever information/scouting the previous regime had done. A new coach's first draft is really not theirs, so I can see why there isn't much loyalty.

I wouldn't mind if they trade him tomorrow. It'd be nice to get more picks as always. Especially given how deep this draft is at certain positions.

Trading Chase is best case scenario now imo (assuming a reasonably fair offer). But it takes 2 to tango. Gonna be an interesting next 30ish hours.

I'd take a conditional 2nd with it becoming a 1st based on performance. Bottom line is get anything you can if he's just not your guy for the future.

This would be ideal..

Don't forget, the Dline played well without Young when he was injured. Allen and Payne can make many DEs look good.
