It seemed reasonable to me, but i just had to mention it as a possibility. Considering the number of needs we have, it doesnt make sense for us to just be sitting on our butts and not doing anything to improve our team with that money now, especially considering we only have 2 draft picks that have a realistic possiblity to produce key contributors in 2009. There are still quite a few quality players out there - why arent we doing anything with the cap space?

Things are just not adding up.

Does T.O. Make Sense for Skins? - Redskins Insider

How can we have 12-13M in cap space, yet have "little flexibility"? It just doesnt make sense. Any thoughts?
Fair question. It's likely because Vinny probably said "little flexibility" before they cut Jason Taylor. JLCs says "Cerrato recently said". It depends on how "recent" JLC's definition of recent is. If it was said before Taylor was cut, then it was true at the time. But now that he has been released, we have mad flexibility. And this makes sense, Vinny was trying to negotiate a restructure with Taylor and didn't expect him to balk at the workout bonus. He was thrown for a loop and then decided it was best to cut him.

When they released Taylor they went from having something like $3 million to having upwards of $11 million. That takes you from not much flexibility to lots of flexibility overnight.

As for the cap information on this site, trust me it's right. I like to think my MBA in Finance wasn't for naught. CC is quite an accountant himself, I've examined his stuff thoroughly and it's right on from my perspective. Further, there's another cap source out there who's also a strong accountant, and CC's numbers tie out to his.

We have to use estimates from time to time to develop cap hits, this is done when we don't have accurate sources for contract info. But those estimates are always in the ballpark. At least close enough to say with certainty that after releasing Jason Taylor the Skins have plenty of flexibility.

Thanks for the response. For what its worth, the Times reported today that we have 6M in cap room. That number doesnt seem like it would fit a pre- or post- cut of JT analysis based on the numbers you've been working with as starting points.

Depending on the source the cap room varies greatly, but we're usually pretty close to the real number. I honestly don't know where the WT gets their info but $6M makes no sense at all. That would mean we were in the red for $2M before releasing Taylor.

I actually saw an article (can't remember source) showing us in the red before the Taylor cut. It wasn't by $2M, closer to $1M i think.

... this cap stuff always confuses.

Not to be arrogant, but $6M is flat out wrong. If you choose to believe in that number, be my guest. Not sure what else I can say.

I have no reason not to beleive the numbers you provide here - im sorry if i gave off that impression. I dont think its arrogant to stand by your work either. You are confident in the work youve done, and the numbers make sense.

I'm just confused because the numbers here seem to conflict with what the Post and the Times are indicating - that we dont have alot of room to play with. The fact that we havent been very active in signing guys since we cut Taylor also confirms that - for whatever reason - the skins are acting as if they dont have much room to play with. If they did have 12-13M in cap space, one would think the skins would be doing a little more to address RT, G, DE, and LB.

Which would all be coming from the same (wrong) source.

I updated my last post to reply to another comment. The skins just dont seem to be acting like a typical redskins team that has 12-13M in cap space right now. It makes me wonder whats going on.

Well they brought in Ray Willis yesterday, who really is the only tackle remaining on the market worth any serious coin. You just didn't hear about the visit until today.

They just signed a punter which we just heard about, and they are bringing in that Brown guy from Arizona.

It sounds like they've been active, we just haven't heard about it because JLC doesn't have the best inside sources anymore, and the national media outlets like SI, ESPN, and CBS don't care to follow our pursuit of teir 2 free agent linemen.

Also, if they've seemed inactive, it's also because the talent available out there now is depleted. I see several decent LBs, but they're old and don't really fit what we're looking for (SLB).

I know it isn't the cap that's holding them back. They're just wondering who's really worth paying for. And on the ones they do think it's worthwhile (Willis) they've just been flying under the radar till today.

All of the free agents worth their salt and under the age of 28 have all been signed.

What you are seeing the rest of the month is going to be a VERY slow market where the economy drives the price of the unsigned players to bargain basement players. There's absolutely no reason for the Redskins or any other team to rush to sign players.

They also were going back and forth with Demetric Evans, which obviously didn't work out.
