Riley has gotten a little better every year. If he does so again, he'll be pretty good next year.

In some categories, sure. In others, not really.

Re: Perry Riley re-signs 3 yrs $13M
Riley, while not a superstar, climbed up through the ranks and deserves to be kept and on team and player friendly terms.
If this link works, Recent news on Perry Riley - Washington Redskins - Rotoworld.com, you can read the tidbits chronologically of how he went from a reach in the 4th round to deserving to being our leading tackler last year. Nah, we don't want to treat him right with a solid contract, silly Redskins! |

Re: Perry Riley re-signs 3 yrs $13M
He's a fringy starter in yards per run tackle and yards per pass target. He's never been awful at either, but the kind of guy you upgrade on if better options are out there.
FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Perry Riley He's been a nice upgrade across the board on Rocky McIntosh...but that's more of a Rocky issue than a Perry Riley compliment. The ideal Perry Riley job in the NFL is 30-40% defensive snaps at LB and 100% of special teams snaps, where he is a positive contributor. Essentially, that's a 3rd LB, and has been historically worth $2-2.5 MM AAV according to the market.

But with one ILB position wide open, keeping him as a starting ILB is hardly our worst move. We can upgrade later.

So Riley was willing to come back, as a starter. If he had been drafted and developed by a winning org, maybe he's willing to come back in the role that best fits him, and for less money. It's understandable. The Redskins didn't seem to have the option to bring him back under the terms I thought he deserved. It seemed to be a situation where you pay him to start, or he was going to explore other opportunities. When the Redskins start to draft and develop a lot of Perry Riley's instead of just one, they'll be able to name their price on him. They're a couple years away still.

Re: Perry Riley re-signs 3 yrs $13M
The historical market value is bunk in a year when then cap had a dramatic rise across the board, and teams are looking at both cash minimums as well as salary cap placement. you want to say he would have gotten 3.25 to 3.75 on the open market, I agree with that, so you pay a little (less then 1/2 a million for sure) and you keep a guy who knows your system, and who you know how to use.
That's not a losers tax, it's not a bad FO, move, and it's definitely not an old Redskins habit type signing. It's a good signing plain and simple. |

If you think he's evidence that the Redskins are developing their own talent, I respect your right to see it that way. And you might be proven right down the road if the Redskins really start to turn out players they draft. But since we don't have the benefit of looking down the road and presuming that the Redskins have it right this time, I think you have to judge moves in the context of the present. I do think that your definition of a good signing is synonymous with any move the Redskins make. That's fair, no? In a sample size of every move, you've liked for the team on the day it's been made. If it's been proven a bad move later, you've changed your opinion appropriately, but you've always given the team the (unearned) benefit of the doubt on the day of the signing. Sometimes, moves can be not good and not bad. This one just...is.

No one is saying Riley is elite, but check out the teams playing a 3-4 D and tell me, other than SF and maybe Philly or SD - who doesn't he start for? New Orleans, Green Bay, Kansas City, Baltimore, Pittsburg, Indianapolis ... he is an upgrade over one or both ILB's on each team. As CRed said, it's a hands down quality signing. No ifs, ands or buts.

So ... signing and extending folks like Paulsen, Young, Robinson, Baker, Riley are NOT evidence of developing their own. Okay.
