Re: Post's Wise Suspended for Hoax Tweet

I have to confess my ignorance with twitter. I thought it was basically a text sent to your phone en mass. Is twitter regulated like tv, radio and print media? If not I don't see the big deal.

not so much, however he identifies himself as an employee of The Washington Post.. pretty much every company tells you when representing the company that there is a code of conduct, etc

People expect news and information instantly these days (and there's basically nothing more instant than Twitter). It's a challenge for members of the media to satisfy the increasingly instant needs of the public for information, and sometimes in a rush to get information out the information may end up being incomplete or even inaccurate. But that can even happen when a reporter is working several months on a story. Mistakes do happen.

Still, I know for a fact that every credible media source understands the impact of platforms like Twitter and is careful to make sure they are comfortable with the validity of the information they post, as they are representing not only themselves but also their employer. If information ends up being inaccurate or wrong, that can happen and, as in the case of Tim Cowlishaw and his mistaken Darrelle Revis tweet last week, the reporter will usually own up to it.

Even when I post something here, I always make sure I'm confident enough in the info I have to post it. I've been wrong plenty of times but it's not from making up info.

Wise has, in my opinion, tossed aside nearly all credibility he ever had by doing this
.
Seriously. How dumb is he? Doing it just to prove a point about twitter? It's like he was saying "hey, you want to see me piss on my career? Watch this!"

In general I like Mike Wise's columns, and his radio show is pretty good, too. But man, this was epically stupid.

I just looked at his twitter page- that moron still hasn't taken down the tweet in question. He did call himself an idiot. At least he's aware of his status.

I honestly back his decision to leave it up. A visible scar is humbling.

I get what you're saying, but he already apologized live on the radio today, and tweeted apologies and called himself an idiot. Isn't that enough?

Sure, but would deleting it really save face for him? Not at all.

I agree it was dumb for a guy who seems to have a good thing going for him and risking with this move was not Wise (pun intended)...But, he did prove his point. Media today will scoop up anything and report it without credible sources. He threw a bone and it got gobbled up. He was correct. I am not supporting what he did but I agree with the guy.

No it wouldn't save any face at all. That's not why I think he should delete it. He should delete if because it's false and just seriously jeopardized his career and credibility.

If a public figure gets arrested and it becomes public knowledge, does that person walk around with that arrest record taped to his/her back? Hell no. Everyone already knows about it. Do your best to put it behind you and move on.

Holy cow what a dope move. I get that Wise is a wise-cracking type goofball but I always thought he seemed like a self-aware intelligent guy. How he thought this was a good idea...and nobody around him voiced objection is baffling.

Well when you dint hear it directly from the horse's mouth you should always get at least two sources to verify. Still, upon until yesterday he was considered a credible source. So he really didn't prove much of anything

I never really looked at Wise as a source or a reporter.. just more of a columnist with an opinion

In the twitter world it's already dead as a submission, the only time that it will be seen is the reports linking to it. I was actually surprised to see it still up once I heard about it though.

I think that he's doing his best to put it behind him

I think that's exactly what he is saying...The story got picked up and reported even without a source. I don't know if you can qualify Wise as a source since he is more of a columnist than a reporter.
