I'm calling bad decision on this one. If they pass up the chance on Marty for Carroll, I think they're headed towards letting the inmates run the asylum. Isn't Pete's picture right next to "Player's Coach" in the dictionary?

Sources: Falcons want to interview USC's Carroll for head coaching vacancy

ATLANTA -- Having so far limited their search to current NFL assistants, the Atlanta Falcons may be about to move outside the box and significantly raise the profile of candidates for their head coaching vacancy.

Multiple sources told ESPN.com late Tuesday night that the Falcons are pursuing Pete Carroll for an interview. If Carroll agrees, and the logistics can be arranged, the Southern California coach could huddle with Atlanta owner Arthur Blank by the weekend. Carroll, who has previously been a head coach in the NFL with the New York Jets and New England Patriots, would certainly become the biggest name on the list of Atlanta candidates.

Carroll, 56, recently completed his seventh season at Southern California with a resounding victory over Illinois in the Rose Bowl. He has led the Trojans to two national championships and compiled a 76-14 record. The 14 defeats have been by an average of just 4.1 points.

Southern California was 11-2 this season and many observers felt that, had it not been for injuries, the Trojans might have vied for the national title. Carroll's .844 winning mark at Southern California is the best in the nation among active coaches with at least five seasons of experience.
Over the past few seasons, there has been rampant speculation that Carroll might be lured back to the NFL, but he has rebuffed all overtures to return to the pro game. Conventional wisdom is that Carroll would only consider an NFL job if he had full control over the football operation. That likely would not be the case in Atlanta, where Blank is seeking a new general manager as well as a head coach.
Authur Blank is a smart man. But when it comes to football he is such an idiot for even contacting this guy. Carroll was not a good NFL coach his 1st go around. Always trying to be buddy buddy with the players. There are PLENTY of qualified professional NFL coaches that will be good hires. How does Norv Turner and Scott Linehan have an NFL jobs and Mike Singletary or Marty S. don't???? If Carroll leaves it's for the $. Plus Atl. is in such bad shape it's not even funny. And on top of that people in Atl don't give two shits about the Falcons. Blank should try and pack up move to another city.

No, but Carroll has almost everything to lose, and very little to gain.

His salary is estimated between $2-$3 million/year, he lives in SoCal, he's got the pick of the litter when it comes to high school talent, and USC is likely to be a top five contender for years to come.

Not to mention the job of a college coach is pretty damn cushy. Wine and dine the boosters, take home a fat paycheck, because the NCAA limits how much teams can practice.

Not so in the NFL. Yeah he might make a few extra million, but in exchange he'll work 18 hours/day, 360 days/year.

I never said Carroll would be smart to take the job...

I always thought Mick Vick was crap, but how the hell was he the glue that held that team together?

From what it sounds like, he wasn't holding the team together, he just made enough plays to keep them in games. He'd gotten a reputation on the team for being selfish & not wanting to ever risk injury. I think w/some of the guys supporting him, it further divided the locker room.

They weren't that bad a couple years ago, but man they fell hard this year. I actually think Carroll might be the kind of guy they need. I give Blank credit for his willingness to take a chance on him.

Just wait and see, in the next few days after he TURNS DOWN the falcons job. He'll be talked about on every sports media outlet as the next redskins coach. I just hope I'm wrong.

carroll's no joke, but that atlanta job is BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD. unless they get a REALLY good QB immediately, it'll be pretty hard to win there.

They need more than just a good QB, they are poor in a lot of areas.
