I hope so but someone is going to try to get him away from us. I agree get rid of Brunell and give that money to Todd.

I really can't see people buying him as a starter (without the saunders system...)

I'm thinking we resign him...he'll get a well deserved raise

He'll be 37 and I'm pretty confident he's good because he knows Saunders' system. If he goes anywhere else I doubt he'd be a starter, and I doubt he'd be quite as successful (if at all) in a different system.

Re: Will Todd Collins Return in 2008?

I think Jason Campbell will be a very fine quarterback for the Redskins at some point. As to who starts next year, that is the kind of decision that fans and sometimes coaches and owners want to make based on personal preferences, or beliefs such as "a player should never be replaced if injured," or based on considerations of age or financial investment.

To me it is a lot simpler - who is the best player at this time? Clearly, Todd Collins is the best quarterback on the Redskins right now, and there is no reason I can think of to imagine he won't still be next season if we sign him to a contract. You have to play your best players as starters. Coach Gibbs has said that before.

We really have to make every effort to sign Todd for next year, with Jason waiting in the wings - until he gets his chance, and shows himself to be the best player.

The players want Todd to be the starter right now and next year because they know with his skill and experience in this system, and all the qualities he brings to the table, he gives the team the best chance to win, and them the best chance to demonstrate their great talent and skill. If the Redskins were to start Jason, the players would know that that choice was based on something other than who plays best. And that would send a signal to them that when they are evaluated, it won't be just on how well they play, but on other considerations out of their control. And that would not be good for them from a motivational perspective.

At this point in his career, I believe he will give the Redskins every fair chance to sign him, and not too many teams will give him a gigantic free agent contract, given his age.

Re: Will Todd Collins Return in 2008?

not sure what team wants to throw big money at a soon to be 37 QB with limited upside... i mean, if he was the missing piece on a super bowl team maybe... but how many teams with superbowl quality talent actually need a good mid level QB?

i mean, maybe SD, but that's about it.

oh yeah, he's also not going to be nearly as good for another team, since he won't know the system (or have 6+ years experience in it) and he won't know his position players either. a big contract from another team could be fools gold.

you can't really promise a 37 year old open competition here either, since that'll retard the young guy that can actually stick around for 12-15 years and he, being "old," is more likely to get injured.

Dump Brunell and keep Collins...though I am sure if someone is willing to give him a starting job we won't be able to re-sign him.

and who, exactly, on the redskins' roster have YOU been talking to to announce that as fact?

todd has limited upside and very few years left. when he came in, saunders did a 180 on his play calling and actually called deep routes to WRs without hamstring problem and not named brandon lloyd. he also was calling plays with an improved o line and a health(ier) clinton portis.

let's not go too far overboard with todd's canton induction just yet. the comparision hasn't been equal, and jason adds scrambling and a much better arm (though his decisions and fumbles aren't right yet).

Well if their is a QB battle...better for it to be for a playoff team than a 4-12 team.

Who cares if jason has a better arm and can run if he's not making the throws and plays that win games?

On another note if our skins make it all the way through the playoffs and get a ring...I gotta imagine that Joe gibbs and Todd Collins will probably hang it up. That would be a great ending for Todd wouldn't it?

I was just about to say the same damn thing.

Let's just enjoy this ride and cross that bridge when we come to it.

Collins has played his way into a new contract to back up Campbell. the dude is 37 years old. anyone who wants him to be the starter next season needs their head examined. as John Madden said, there is probably a reason he hasn't thrown a pass the last 10 years

One could also say maybe there was a reason Kurt Warner was playing in the AFL instead of the NFL but when his chance came in the NFL he was great. TC is getting his chance and he is delivering. TC may be 37 but he is a young 37 without much wear & tear on his body. IMO that means he has 3+ years good years left in him in this AS offense and definitely worth resigning. I think right now TC is not only more competent and confident in the O he is also a much more fundamentally sound QB than Campbell. Campbell has lots of talent but thats not enough, he has to develop that talent. Hopefully he can do that.

Yeah but it's looking like that reason is because he was stuck behind Trent Green for all those years and the perception of Collins around the league was dead wrong. He can play.
