I think Smootsmack has it right with the following exceptions:

1. Fox will be the 3rd safety behind Landry and Pray-Low and,

2. Who in the heck is Cedric Griffin?

(Way to go out on a limb with Allbright)

Re: The Official First Unofficial Predict the Opening Day Roster Thread

OFFENSE: (23)

OT: Jansen, Samuels (Wade, Pucillo)
OG: Thomas, Ross Tucker (Tucker Peterson (OFA), Lefotu)
C: Rabach
- I think the coaches really like Pucillo and Tucker. I think they keep Lefotu as a developmental player. He may be a practice squad guy (if he is still eligible). I don't think Whitworth makes the team - GBay gave up on him when their line stank. He strikes me as big, fat and slow. I like the OFA guy from Vermont simply b/c of the write-up he had. He isn't signed yet but I am thinking he is EXACTLY the type of OFA that will be a player in years to come.
Overall, after reviewing the roster, I like our O-Line and its depth. I think it will be the strength of the offense.

WR: Moss, Randel-El (LLoyd, Thrash, Espy)
- The Lloyd experiment comes to a halt as he tells A. Saunders "It's not my fault I ran the wrong route. Blame it on the Offensive Coodinator and the crap game he is calling."

TE: Cooley (Yoder, (Pucillo))
- Not a whole lot of options here. As with last year, I think Pucillo ends up being the blocking tight-end by default.

RB: Portis/Betts (Cartwright)
FB: Sellers
- Again, pretty much set.

QB: Campbell (Brunell, Bramlett)
- Duh.

DEFENSE 22

DE'S: Daniels, Carter (Wynn, Jamal Green)
DT'S: Golston, Griffin, (Montgomery, Salavea)
- I think we squeeze one more year out of Daniels, Wynn and Salavea. At DE, the young talent just doesn't strike me as all that talented.

LB: Washington, Fletcher, McIntosh (Marshall, Blades, (Sartz))
- Marshall is the first one off the bench at each position, Blades learns the ropes. Sartz is the emergency outside backer.

CB: Springs, Smoot (Rogers, Macklin (Jimoh))
- Springs stays put, Smoot steps back into the 2 spot and Rogers cools his heels as the no.3 corner.

S: Taylor, Prileou (Landry, Doughty, Fox)
- Until midseason when Landry teams with Taylor. By the end of the year the two are feeding off each other and playing with scary instinct for each other and the ball.

SPECIAL TEAMS: (7)
P: Frost
K: Suisham
LS: Albright
ST Players: Jimoh, K. Campbell, Sartz, Chris Wilson
- Wilson cracks the team as a STeamer and eventually moves into the back up weakside LB position. Suisham is the Skins kicker for the next 10 years.

I dont know, Portis was, as we all know, very banged up last year. If Betts gets the fumbling under control (which he should do) then i'd see a huge benefit for us in splitting time at RB. Keeping Portis fresh and healthy is only going to make him better when he does carry.

I'd also hope to see both of them in on a fair few plays together, really confuse defences about which way we're running or even passing.

Why? What reason do we have to believe that either one will get significantly more touches than the other.

Betts is a proven pro-caliber running back more than capable of taking on the full load. Saunders will look to even the ball distribution to ease the beating Portis takes during the season, and to prevent the possibility of losing either one of them. Portis is the better full time back, so the nod for most carries will most likely go to him.

I also see Betts being a big dump off/hot route option when the blitz is on.

They'll keep Portis in to block, since that's an area he excels in, and use Betts as a pass option because he has great hands.

I think an excellent use of personel would be using Betts as a slot receiver in 4 WR sets, with Portis in the backfield.

It would eliminate the need for us to keep 5 WRs on the roster.

Thats a great idea cuz if one WR gets hurts Taylor can play both ways and i know we've all been dying to see more of that

Excellent point Tripp....

Betts could easily start in the back field, go into motion and line up as a slot or vice versa (a la Randel El). Betts has earned himself a bigger role in the offense... I can guarantee you that he won't be under utilized.

I had a sort of similar thought a couple of years ago

OFFENSE

QB: Jason Campbell; Todd Collins, Mark Brunell
-Saunders gets his wish and TC is bumped up to #2. Moot point really as neither he nor Brunell will take the field in 2007 and be gone by 2008

RB: Clinton Portis; Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright
-This should even be a discussion

FB: Mike Sellers
-Nemo will get some horrifically untimely fumble in preseason that will seal his fate

TE: Chris Cooley; Todd Yoder
-Still need a good blocker here. Don’t think Ecker is that guy yet

WR: Santana Moss; Brandon Lloyd; Antwaan Randle El; James Thrash, Mike Espy
-I’m very much in the minority here I know, but I like this receiving corps

OL: Chris Samuels; Will Whitticker; Casey Rabach; Randy Thomas; Jon Jansen, Todd Wade, Mike Pucillo, Taylor Whitley;
-I have no idea who will start at LG so for now I’ve stuck Whitt there. I think Wade is the favorite but something tells me he doesn’t start. Not at the beginning of the season at least

LS: Ethan Albright
-Death, taxes, and Ethan Albright

K: Sean Suisham

KR: Betts, PR: El

DE: Andre Carter; Renaldo Wynn; Demetric Evans; Jamaal Green; Justin Hickman
-This here says P Danny gets cut. And Wynn regains his starting role…until we get Justin Smith!

DT: Cedric Griffin; Kedrick Golston; Jared Clauss; Anthony Montgomery; Lorenzo Alexander
-Sayonara Salave’a as we focus on some unheralded youth on the interior. Golston can take Salave’a’s spot. No one can take C Griff’s yet so he stays another year

LB: Lemar Marshall; London Fletcher-Baker; Marcus Washington; Rocky McIntosh; H.B. Blades; Anthony Trucks
-I like Khary Campbell but he sort of hit a plateau in my opinion. This past weekend sealed his fate. He and Posey are gone. Sartz makes the practice squad

CB: Shawn Springs; Fred Smoot; Carlos Rogers; David Macklin; Ade Jimoh
-A healthy Shawn Springs is the key here. Most think he’ll be cut or traded but I think he stays. The Ade hangs on by a thread

S: Sean Taylor; Vernon Fox; LaRon Landry; Reed Doughty; Pierson Prieoleau
-In a bit of a shocker I’ve got Fox starting week one, with Pierson not quite healthy enough and LaRon too green. By the end of September Landry is starting. Also, Omar Stoutmire doesn’t make the final roster

P: Frost

I'm two players short-leaning toward Joe Sykes and keeping Khary Campbell. I like this Peterson kid but I think he's practice squad material in 2007. There still is the possibility of course of getting players not currently on the roster.
Hate to break it to you SmootSmack, but you only have 51 guys on your roster and last time I checked you need 53. Also if anybody is getting cut its Wynn and not Daniels, no way does Vernon Fox beat out Prioleau and Landry, and no way does Will Whitticker beat out Todd Wade at LG.
