Let's just see if there is a repeat of last year before we conclude that Rogers suck.
Sorry, no coach tells his players to sit and wait and put a huge cushion between himself and the guy he is defending... Rogers had cement in his shoes.

Ummm....I think Rogers was doing exactly what they told him to do, which was give a cushion.

Now maybe Williams had him play that way because of lack of pass rush up front, I don't know.

Sorry but no coach would put up with a player giving that big of a cushion.

Re: Huge Cushion

I think the answer depends on the WR's talents. For example, if a guy has trouble beating press coverage, the coaches are more inclined to use press coverage. If a guy (e.g. T.O.) can beat press coverage and is speedy, you are going to be 5-10 yards off the line. It also depends on whether the coaches are running a zone or man scheme. It also depends on whether the coaches are calling a blitz. In sum, I don't think that there is any one answer, it depends on a lot of factors.

However, I think it is fair to say that that the CBs weren't playing as much press coverage because we were getting beat for huge plays.

Is Rogers your brother or something? You are always defending him and he SUCKED last year. I don't care how talented you are, if you are can't catch the damn ball, tackle a guy, rush a guy, and when you do "try" you end up getting an interference call - YOU SUCK.

Re: Huge Cushion

If Williams wanted Rogers to play close to the line of scrimmage and yet he still kept lining up 5-10 yards back how long do you really think he would have stayed in/started games?
I really think it was more a matter of scheme.

I don't think I'm defending him, per se. I just think he'll get better, or at least he should get better. I'm more critical of our defensive coaching staff than I am of any one player on are team though.

I don't think this staff has put this group of players in the best situations to succeed. That's what good coaches do; They make do with the talent they have. Our defense has been on a gradual slide since 2004.

I bet, and this is total conjecture on my part, if you put Rogers on a team like the Ravens, he'd be a beast!

Are we brothers? Yes, but I'm the good looking one

I agree, but I also think our defense is not nearly as talented as we think it is. On the defensive line, Griffin is our only star and he's either getting doubled or is injured, or both. We plugged in guys at DT (e.g., Salave'a, Golston, and Daniels) who would be backups on other teams. At linebacker, Washington is the only star and teams simply ran away from him. How many teams would have started Warrick Holdman? In the secondary, Springs was out all season, Rogers is still learning the ropes and could be a bust, and who the hell is Vernon Fox?

I no longer consider Griffin a star. In fact, if I had to absolutely pin our woes on one player, it would be Griffin. This is unfair, but he didn't even play well when he was healthy. For Sean Taylor to lead the team in tacklesk, by a wide margin, is unacceptable. I think Griff had some rediculous number, like 50 something tackles this year. Oh well.

Wait, are you saying that 50 tackles for Griff is bad or good? Because 50 tackles for a DT is outstanding when you consider that he was injured all season long and was the only guy on the line drawing double teams. That stat seems to indicate he can still play. I don't think we've heard the last of Griffin, particularly if we get someone to play alongside him like Alan Branch.

I hope Griff rebounds....no 50 tackles are good for most. But I think this past year was his least productive as a Skin.

I certainly agree that last season was his least productive as a Skin, but I think he'll rebound if he isn't hurt throughout next season. I've seen enough of him to have faith he'll be fine next season - he's the least of our worries along the defensive line.

Re: Huge Cushion

NOBODY was good last year, not a single one. Let's give them a pass this time considering they've been in the top ten two seasons prior. Let's see how they fare THIS go round.

Re: Huge Cushion

lets not panic on rogers just yet, remember when champ bailey came in, he had alot of help in that secondary. i mean his opposite was darrell green and deion sanders..... its takes some longer to develop.
