Re: portis trade?
Clinton Portis - #26 - Running back - 5'11" - 205lbs
News: Houston may reportedly show interest in Clinton Portis this offseason. Impact: Here we go. Along with Ron Dayne, Portis, who has a history in Gary Kubiak's scheme, would form one of the league's premier backfields. This would free up the Texans to choose a first-round defensive back, defensive end, or even quarterback. Re-working Portis' contract to make it tradable would be the biggest obstacle for a blockbuster like this. (Fri. Dec 29, 2006) this is the best i could do, being a computer newbie

FOX Sports - NFL - Washington Redskins Team Front Left hand column, under Fantasy News-Clinton Portis Appropriately under "Fantasy" 'cause I think that's all this is. Just a fantasy.

Re: portis trade?
We cant afford a #1 draft pick!! Its not gonna happen anyway, unless they make a deal to sweet to pass up. And it would have to be real sweet. Personally I like to see us trade our #1 for a couple more picks. Im just not sold on #1s anymore, not for the money they get before they even suit up. So many are just not worth it.

Re: Portis trade rumor
The Texans may be thinking about pursuing Portis, but as soon as they initiate discussions with Gibbs they'll realize he's not for sale.
Gibbs will NEVER trade Portis. No way, no how. First off, he LOVES Portis. Secondly, we'd have to take a big salary cap hit to trade one of our best players. Not gonna happen. I love idiotic trade rumors that don't give consideration to the salary cap. It's the #1 way to tell if a rumor is just that.

Re: Portis trade rumor
PS Trading Portis would force us to carry $8.1 million in deadcap money in 2007. Portis is scheduled to count a lot in 2007 as it currently stands: $7.0 million. So it doesn't seem like going from $7.0 to $8.1 would be a big deal.
But the team fully expects to restructure Portis' contract to pay him what he's owed, yet reduce that $7.0 million cap figure. To be fair to Fox Sports, all they said was the Texans plan to pursue Portis. They said nothing about whether we'd be willing to discuss it. Close examination of the situation tells us there's no way in hell we'd consider it.

Re: Portis trade rumor
They didn't even say that. All they said was "may reportedly show interest" And all because Portis used to play for Kubiak. This is not unlike people speculating bringing Trent Green here because he used to play for Saunders.

Re: portis trade?
That sounds about right. I wonder what the Texans will put on the table. I'm not sure they'd want to part with Demeco or a first rounder, but Portis garnered the best cornerback in the league and a #2 before, so the Texans would have to trade one of their best players, but that isn't saying a whole lot, so a #1 might be necessary too.
I'd hate to see Clinton go though. He struggled in Saunders' offense. I wonder if he'd want to return to Kubiak's O. He seems like a diehard Redskin though, so what would Ladell Betts garner in trade bait? |
