Re: Plasma vs. LCD

You should definately choose a projection-style TV over plasma for one simple reason: plasmas can't be repaired. They're basically disposable because of that reason.

Just buy a good 1080i projection TV and you'll be happy. I have a 42" Samsung and am VERY happy with it. It also cost a lot less than a plasma and I won't have to replace it if there's a problem down the road.

NFL is shot is 720P. Make sure the set you can buy can properly display it. If you dont, you will get a screen that looks like its chopped off in the corners. I have a friend with a dell plasma 42 inch, you can't even see the score...

My best advice is go to the store and look at the tv's you like. Compare them to other floor models.

looks awesome!!! i dont know if they make a smaller version.

I was also going to recomment CNET. They do a good job reviewing all aspects. I recently bought a 40" LCD Samsung and i'm very happy w/ it. The sound is not great but the picture is. Most of the time you'll be running the sound through a theatre system or stereo system anyway. I did some major research and finally decided to just get the one that looked the best and didn't cost the most.

The Phillips TVs I've seen all have wickedly reflective screens. Go with Panasonic.

Remember back in the day when it was easy to buy a damn TV.

Man, things are really complicated now.

I don't know about new LCDs but old LCDs had piss poor refresh rates (~30 hertz) and the higher the resolution the more noticeable it was. They also suffer from trailing artifacts when things are moving quickly.

Yeah, you could choose from 13", 19", or 25". If you picked the 25", you had to decide if you wanted just the tv or a console tv like most grandparents bought!

Yeah that used to be the main issue with LCDs, I don't think it's as much of an issue anymore and it's only improving with the newer models.

Seriously, now you really have to take some time and do some research. Especially for the $$, it's more of an investment that it used to be.

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

Still waiting for the price skimming to go down. Prices are droppping but not enough for me just yet. I think by the time the switch to digital cable takes effect prices on these tv's (LCD/DLP) should more closely reflect production costs rather than "new technology" novelty costs.

I understand. I took the dive into "big wide HDTV for football games" last year.

When my wife complained I was watching too much football, I told her "Look, they designed the TV for football games, don't you see how the screen is shaped like a football field?"
