I loved Aenima back in the day, behind Rage probably my favorite Rock CD.

Radiohead and Tool are my two absolute favorites in all the land. And I've always felt that the only way to truly appreciate either one of them is to listen to them over and over and over and over.

I'd write "over and over" a few more times, but I think you get the point.

Both of those bands really are an acquired taste. Nobody listens to them for the first time and says hey, I think I like Tool, or hey I think I like Radiohead. They're the kind of groups you hear for the first time and you say, "what the shit is this crap I'm listening to?"

Then you listen to it for a while and you're like, "wait a minute, this is pretty good." Then before you know it you can't bring yourself to take it out of the CD player.

I think Tool is such an acquired taste because their songs are so long. It takes the average person a while to get used to listening to 8 minute songs after hearing 3.5 minute songs on the radio all the time. But Tool's songs seem to tell a story to me, and often they seem to paint an image in my head without even the use of lyrics. Like the title track off Aenema, track #13. "Some say a comet will fall from the sky. Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves. Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still. Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits. Some say the end is near. Some say we'll see armageddon soon. I certainly hope we will cuz I sure could use a vacation from this silly shit, stupid shit...One great big festering neon distraction, I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied. Learn to swim. Mom's gonna fix it all soon. Mom's coming 'round to put it back the way it ought to be..." Then the instrumentals that follow that I can't even begin to describe. But I can actually SEE the music in my head as if it's telling me a story, that the world really is coming to an end. It makes me feel like I really need to be preparing myself to swim to safety as if the world is about to end. Sounds bizarre, but that's exactly why they're such an acquired taste. I appreciate that for absolutely exceptional composing work. When you can take music and paint a picture in my head, you've done something exceptional.

I can't wait for 10,000 days. Maynard never disappoints.
Yeah def a radiohead fan... though I kinda lost touch with them after ok computer. I just recently got hooked on Kid A, which is just amazing... so dark and so many layers to it. You can find something new in it with each listen, it never gets old.

Re: New Tool Album coming 5/2

Lyrics to 'Vicarious'

Eye on the TV
Cuz tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavour it happens to be
I am killed by the husband
Drugged by the ocean
Shot by his own son he used to poison
Through this tube, as kills trickle by
This black little story is no fun
Until someone dies

Don’t look at me like I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying ‘why oh why?’

Cuz I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all need it, too
Don’t lie

Why can’t we just admit it?
Why can’t we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Knee to the grave, noble
Writers just tore his soul
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die from a good safe distance
Vicariously I am
While the whole world dies
You all feel the same so why can’t we just admit it?

Blood, like rain, come down
Drum on, grave and drown
Caught in the pothole
You're carnivores and voyeurs
Still, heaven sends me to sing to the death rattle

La la la la la la lie
La la la la la la lie
La la la la la la lie
La la la la la la lie

*talking in the background*

Credulous, the bestial desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Put your hand onto your head, please
Believe and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive - so it is
So it's always been

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

HOLY CRAP. I can't believe how awesome that song is. Finally another epic that can actually rival Eulogy. WOW.

Thanks Matty, that link made my weekend!

Re: New Tool Album coming 5/2

I just downloaded the whole disc. It's in .m4a format. I can give the links for that and I'm in the process of converting it to mp3 for my mp3 player so once that's all done I can give you links for that too.

Here it is in mp3 format.

It's too soon in the listening process to give a review but if you're a true Tool fan then you know you have to listen to it a few times before you get a good sense of what it's all about.
