#1 His monster contract. He's also due a roster bonus of $6.5M this offseason. The team has already shown in the past they're not afraid of absorbing a large cap hit if it means getting rid of dead weight (Coles). Yes it will be a huge bullet to bite but when you look at the long-term impact of wiping his contract off our slate it makes more sense to do it now rather than later.

#2 The fact that this defense has succeeded without him in the lineup.

#3 His speaking out/distractions in the press don't help his cause any, no matter how insignificant they may be.

Personally I'd be shocked if he's back with the Redskins next year, both from a financial standpoint and on the field standpoint. He's grossly overpaid and the defense has gotten the job done just fine without him.
Matty, you have told me a million times back when I said LA should be traded (back when he was worth something) that there is no way the skins can trade him because of the cap hit. Period, end of discussion. I see now that you think the cap hit is no big deal. Also your #2 point is what I have been saying all last year. Thanks for seeing the light.

I would also add that as far as this coaching staff is concerned, LA has done absolutely nothing for them. I know he's been hurt and all but the bottom line is that LA has not done anything to make this staff take notice. I only wish the skins had traded him back when I suggested and been able to get something of value for him.

#1 I believe I held the view that his cap hit would be too much prior to the Coles situation... that changed everything.

#2 You were right, I was wrong, congrats! It isn't the first time I've been wrong and it definitely won't be the last.

Under ideal circumstances LaVar would be a great piece to this D. I have no doubt he will go elsewhere and remain a very good LB. As the saying goes, 'One man's trash is another man's treasure'.

In this case GW and company just don't have much use for an overpaid LB who by most accounts tends to freelance too much and can't keep his mouth shut in the papers.

I am glad that this team now seems more concerned with how a player performs than how marketable he is. I applaud GW for sticking to his guns on LA.

Could anyone tell how much Lavar was on the field Sunday. I could only remember seeing him on one play but I have no idea how much he did play. It sucks watching the game with alot of people and half are tlking about their hair or something like that.

He started and he seemed to be out there most of the time, though I did notice he was still being pulled on 3rd downs.

And he still only had one tackle? Whats up with that? I thought that maybe he was only in for a couple of plays. Before the game I was thinking that he just might come out and make a statement with a big game.

Re: Can we trade for Smoot now?

I don't want Smoot back. He is too skinny and not a very good tackler. Yes he has good coverage skills, but his run support is lacking. I would rather draft another CB and develop him. A healthy Springs, Rogers and Harris can hold the position down while another rookie deveolps next year. Why overpay for Smoot when he is not a complete CB. Rogers will be a better CB next year than Smoot.

2 questions:

What is Smoot’s health status?

Are they expecting Carlos Rogers to be available at some point during the playoffs, assuming we advance deeper?

Not sure about Smoot, but Rogers is ready to play.

Rogers says he'll be back this week

Quote:
While the Redskins await word on whether top cornerback Shawn Springs will be available for Saturday's playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, rookie cornerback Carlos Rogers said yesterday he will return for Washington's first postseason contest since the 1999-2000 season.
Quote:
"I'll be ready, no doubt," Rogers said. "If it hurts, it hurts. But I'll be out there."

Oh man, we really need Springs to be healthy. I don't want anymore Walt Harris nightmares.

Maybe this time we'll be able to generate some pressure on Chris Simms. That should help.

No trading after mid season.
