Re: Can't say it enough, let's give it up for Portis
After the S.D. game, i went insane about how Portis wasn't doing cut backs and wasn't being explosive. I guess that committment back to the running game provided him a spark. He is a complete player and i hope there is some way he can stay with us for an extended amount of time.

Re: Can't say it enough, let's give it up for Portis
The guy is an absolute beast - seams tough as nails too. I love how his jersey is the dirtiest one on the field, all stretched and tattered out of shape too. The guy just keeps on working - takes a big hit, gets back into it. He seems to be getting alot of small injuries here and there but somehow manages to get back on the field and keep going.
Just a phenominal all around back - blocking, catching and running.

Re: Can't say it enough, let's give it up for Portis
i was going to start a thread exactly like this but i'm always posting things like this about Portis so it's really good to see it from somebody else.
* Portis is the TOUGHEST, HARDEST PLAYING M.F. on this team * that guy is a piece of iron, taking all kinds of punishment while producing for us ALL YEAR, and no matter how hard he's hit, or what tough inside play vs. an 8 man front (that he knows will hurt his avg.) is called, he's ALWAYS back for more. i don't think i've seen him take more than 3 PLAYS off much less a GAME. he blocks defensive ends just as hard as he hits the miniscule holes he's given, showing how much he cares about the TEAM and not his stats. he's done it ALL in EXACTLY the way everyone said he COULDN'T: Smash mouth, physical, inside, singleback, pass protecting, hell, even pass THROWING. those 200some lbs doing more physical Gibbs style Redskin football in a season than well, ANY REDSKIN BACK IN HISTORY according to the all-mighty stats. with Brunell hurt and limping, and Santana and Cooley out of the gameplan, i have to just agree with the latest bandwagon jumping words from Howie Long "he carried the team to the playoffs on his back" . not to mention, you know it's not all horsesh*t when Cowboy commentator [Aikman] is singing all the praises in the world to the guy who just eliminated his former team from the playoffs.. not only is the 'little' guy still on the field after every hit, block, or catch of this crazy season of tough close games, he's done it all with the biggest SMILE on the team. Clinton Portis ladies and gentleman, just like you said Matty, the MVP of the Redskins this season. what you think Santana and Brunell would've connected so much if Portis hadn't knocked over that blitzer? Look again, he's easy to recognize - he's always the Redskin with the dirtiest uniform.

Well said. I appreciate anybody playing with mad heart, and Portis does. I'm glad he is on our team. That guy is a great back. Way to go Big P. He should get extra jacked-up to playing in fla.

I would. Portis has proven himself a true Redskin and workhorse. Hard to argue against him now.

A true Redskin.
Everything we could have wanted in a back:

Hell yeah. Portis saved our season, and he's shown he's willing to play hurt, catch passes, recover fumbles - do whatever it takes to help the Skins win. All hail Jerome from Southeast!

On the other hand, OUR fans are pretty darned civilized and courteous. Did we abuse the Dallas fans a couple of weeks ago? Not in a way that crossed the line - from what I saw it was very good-natured. Oh, and Portis is the most exciting RB we've had since Riggins. He's truly fun to watch and you get the impression that he's having a hell of a good time, too. I'm very happy that he's eclipsed Stephen Davis's team season record. |

Re: Can't say it enough, let's give it up for Portis
Portis is the man! That TD in the philly game proved, as well as the tough yards he grinded out in the last two games against the Giants and Dallas is an amazing testamanet to how he adjusted from a Denver style offense to the Gibbs offense.
Kudos to Portis, and most importantly, Kudos to skins fans for staying strong, believing, and let's enjoy our status as the playoff team for this coming week. I for one did not expect us to make it this season, and I'm glad I was wrong. |

I've been critical of Portis and the trade since Day One. And I still say that the front office probably gave up too much to get him. To me, it was a questionable transaction purely in terms of the pricetag. But that's not the fault of Portis. Up until the last five games, I looked at him -- along with the team that surrounded him -- as an average player, and nothing particularly special. But he, and the team as a whole have turned themselves completely around and are on a roll. At this point, there is no doubt that he has fully adjusted to this offense and its schemes, and has developed a cohesive rhythym with the O-line. 27 carries and 112 yards still doesn't quite equal an eye-popping average, but it's getting the job done. I don't think anyone argues with that. The heroes today were the defense and the 6 takeaways. Without those, this game is lost. When this team was 5-6, I was unimpressed with Portis, Joe Gibbs, and the team altogether. Obviously, a five game winning streak and clinching a playoff berth changes things. Everyone who pays attention to professional football has just witnessed Joe Gibbs turn a perpetually struggling team into playoff contenders. I don't know if I agree with Howie Long and others who say that it was solely the play of Clinton Portis that carried this team. It would have been tough to do it without him, but many others have stepped up too. |

Re: Can't say it enough, let's give it up for Portis
offensively, portis carried the team. the defense really played good , especially towards the end of the game. portis seemed to get stronger and stronger as the game went on. nice to see him get the redskins single season rushing record.

I agree with you on many points. I think what Long meant was that when it comes to a ball controlled offense that relies heavily on a running back, Portis has been THE guy to step up to the plate and deliever. You have to be a workhorse in this offense, and Portis has proven that he can be as such. It is also true, you have to consider Moss, Cooley, the defense......also Brunell. He hasn't been a Hall of Famer, but he's contributed to this team's success.
