Re: Cowboys/Redskins in the first round?
wolfe is right if there is a three way tie in this situation it goes to a conference but if one team had lost to both teams they would be out or if one team beat the other two they would be in. After that it goes to tiebreaker by conference
That is why if the steelers tied with the jags and the chargers they would have been out even though they beat the chargers |

no, why do you think the skins were in position to beat the cowboys ,dallas and minnesota ? it was because the skins have the best record inside of their conference ( NFC ). now if two or more teams have identical overall records and conference records then it goes to head to head.

Re: Cowboys/Redskins in the first round?
Playoff spots go in this order.
1. Division winners - This is why Patriots a playoff spot early when SD & KC had better records. 2. Overall Record 3. Conference record - If it's b/n division teams, then it's division record, but if it's b/n 2 teams from different conferences, then they go with the team with the best record in the conference. A team that was 5-7 wouldn't get in over a team that is 8-4 in the conference regardless of head-2-head. |

Head-2-head is only used if the 2 teams have the same conference record.

Yellow was right. We would go if 3 way tier between us Cowboys and Car because head to head would not apply because we did not play Car. It would then go to CONF record because teams are from diff divisions!!! Head to head is ALWAYS 1st tie break.

Re: Cowboys/Redskins in the first round?
Three or More Teams
*If two clubs remain tied after a third is eliminated during any step, the tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-team format. Start by eliminating all but the highest ranked club in each division by using the divisional tiebreaker above. After the field has been narrowed to no more than one team from each division, the following tiebreakers are used: 1. Head-to-Head 2. Conference Record 3. Common Games (minimum of four) 4. Strength of Victory 5. Strength of Schedule 6. Combined Ranking Among Conference Teams (points scored and points allowed) 7. Combined Ranking Among All Teams (points scored and points allowed) 8. Net Points (conference games) 9. Net Points (all games) 10. Net Touchdowns (all games) 11. Coin toss * Wild-Card tie breakers are also used to determine home-field advantage. ----------------------------------------------------- I am almost positive that the first step there should have more explaination. Head to head is used but only if one team has beaten all of the other teams or if one team has been beaten by all of the other teams --------------------- Team 1-Has beaten team 2 and has a 6-6 conference record Team 2-Has lost to team 1 and has a 8-4 confernce record Team 3-Never played team 1 or 2 and has a 10-2 conference record So if team 1 has played team 2 and won but team 1 has not played team 3 it would go to conference record and team 1 has the worst conference record and is eliminated even though it has beaten team 2 |

Yeah, Yellow31 is correct.
Head to head comes BEFORE conference records when determining wild-cards. |

Re: Cowboys/Redskins in the first round?
i'm confused because it also says that a team can win it's division by head to head , even if it has a worse divisional record than another team within the same division.:frusty:
in other words it's saying that the skins could have a division record of 2-4 ,while dallas has a division record of 4-2. the skins would win the division because their 2 division victories were against dallas. makes no sense.

----------------------------------------------- But as i said if a team has beaten ALL ALL ALL of the others competing for the wildcard with the same overall record they get in for sure or if they have lost to ALL ALL ALL the others competing for the wildcard with the same overall ranking they don't get in. http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakers TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken. 1. If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker. 2. If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps. ........... Three or More Clubs (Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of applicable two-club format.) 1. Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants. 2. Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.) 3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference. 4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four. 5. Strength of victory. 6. Strength of schedule. 7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed. 8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed. 9. Best net points in conference games. 10. Best net points in all games. 11. Best net touchdowns in all games. 12. Coin toss sheesh i was beginning to doubt myself. I should learn not to do that. SO in conclusion Wolfe is right. Dallas did not "SWEEP" us and carolina so they go because of conference record ............... .................... I THINK? no no no I am pretty sure...? Re: Cowboys/Redskins in the first round?
You guys lost me, with all that mess, but if you have the same overall record head to head is the first tie breaker, that is why we can't leap frog Tampa if we have the same record. We have the better conference record than Tampa, but we lost the head to head. Same would apply for Carolina and Dallas if they have the same overall record Dallas would go due to the head to head win this past week.

For the Redskins I am very enviuos, all you have to do is beat Philly and you are in. For Dallas there are 3 possible scenarios: 1. Dallas beats St Louis and Washington looses to Philly. Highly unlikely, but the only way Dallas gets in OVER Washington is to finish the regular season with a better over all record than Washington. 2. Dallas beats St Louis and Carolina looses to Atlanta. Dallas owns the #1 tie breaker with the win in Carolina last weekend. 3. Dallas beats St Louis and Tampa Bay looses to New Orleans. This is where it gets tricky. If Carolina wins and Tampa looses in this scenario, then Tampa is out of the playoffs. Carolina would win the NFC South. Washington would get the first wildcard and the #5 seed and Dallas would win the second wild card and the #6 seed. Dallas owns the #3 tie breaker on Tampa. They have four common opponents and Dallas beat the 49ers in week 3 and the Bucs lost to S.F. in week 8. But for the Redskins it is "win and you're in" where as for me I will be rubbing the fur off of a rabbits foot all day on Sunday since Dallas plays the Sunday night game. |
