And you could possibly throw Rodgers and Eli in there as well, though I would not.

So if there's a first overall type once every 2 or 3 years, and it's generally pretty obvious when you have one, you can't pass on them. But it's not like you can trade up to try to create one, when it's just not there.
Just curious why your not including Eli in there when he was drafted before Big Ben was in 2004?

I think we can get a solid RB in even the 4th or 5th round.

I think Big Ben is debatable there as well, actually. I just think he's less scheme dependent than Manning is.

I think we can as well, but we really need to get immediate dividends from that RB, and I'd rather spend a first or second rounder to get a franchise type guy than get stuck with a complementary guy in the 4th.

Of course, even a part time guy would be better than what we currently have.

If there is no best player available, like there's no situation where Orakpo falls to us, then you could reach a little bit on Russell Okung, or you could take the top quarterback on the board to satisfy a need. I don't think the top QB on my board is going to be gone until the middle of the first round, so it is what it is.
Who is the top QB on your board?

I would LOVE to have Brandon Spikes. Did you see his pick 6 yesterday? Plus the guy is a leader and can flat out stuff the run. He's a perfect 4-3 MLB. But it would make me cringe to use another high first round pick on defense when the O is so badly lagging.

Tripp likes McCoy

Agreed.

Well, if you give me just one pick in the first two rounds to use on an offensive tackle, I could make something adequate out of the offense using just mid-tier free agents. We do need to get to rebuilding the offense at some point, but if the clear BPA is a defensive guy, someone who could score TDs on passes from other teams QBs, that'd be one way to help the Redskins score points. The other thing is: you might change defensive schemes and need another piece in the front seven.

The top QB on my board is Colt McCoy. But it will be interesting to see what happens to Tebow's stock when he goes through the draft process. If there's a bunch of teams that want him in the first round, we could, and probably should get in on that.

If teams simply view him as a package player, then he'd be useless to us.

Re: Our 2010 First Round Draft Pick Should Be...

I think I'm split between o-line and qb, but what I would hope is that we go o-line for the first couple rounds, and we can pick up a free agent qb and stick him back there for a year and then focus on getting a great talent at quarterback in the 2011 draft or through free agency in 2010 if we see lots of big talent hitting the market.

Running back is not a concern although I would like to replace Portis after this season. I feel pretty confident that a good coach could go pluck a running back out of the mid rounds and have him be successful. So many coaches are doing that nowadays and finding successfull running backs it's ridiculous. Brandon Jacobs, Marion Barber, and Tashard Choice were all 4th round picks. There's no reason we couldn't find somebody explosive in the mid rounds. And we could either make Portis come off the bench occasionally and have a nice two back system with the new back being more of an explosive home run hitter and have Portis doing more of the mauler. At this point in his career I think Portis is more of a grinder than a burner.

There is a guy who has a 7 on his jersey for Notre Dame that we should seriously consider in the second round:

Sam Young, , NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Do you see the team trying to make any deals get more early round picks?

SS, do you think Levi Jones could play LT next season? Like, adequately?

This is assuming we draft a RT in the second round, of course.

For a year? Sure. And then maybe someone like a Blake DeChristopher or Jariel Carimi in 2011...as opposed to say Terrell Pryor

Bill Parcells passed on Matt Ryan, and I would defend that decision. He realized that if he didn't address the O-line in a big way, it didn't matter who his QB would be. Drafting Jake Long was the right move, and the Dolphins will be relevant before we will, because Parcells teams don't get whipped in the trenches the way we do (especially on offense). He went from 1-15 to 11-5 with weak armed Pennington at QB for crying out loud!!!
