Re: Gameplan vs Bills:Vanilla or Butter Pecan?
I dunno...as unsettled as things seem up front I'd look to wait till the line gels together by third preseason game and then let RGIII play as long as he wants to get comfortable.
Running for his life in first NFL game speed experience seems like a terrible idea.

If that's the reality of being the Redskins QB, he has to deal with it. I don't think the O-line is going to be THAT bad that he has no chance. They're also going to tailor the offense to not only fit him, but protect him. I saw a lot of shotgun/pistol and screen passes at practice on Saturday. He won't be holding onto the ball long on passing plays and there will be plenty of runs called too. Last year, Rex made it through the year and he had zero mobility and was getting hit all the time. Later in the year, especially when we beat the Giants, he had rookies and guys off the street blocking for him and Trent Williams was suspended...and didn't just make it out alive, but he led us to victory. I'm not worried about RGIII behind this line. True, the line has holes, especially at RT, but it's not as bad as people are crying about. Williams, Montgomery, Chester are all solid. Kory Lichtensteiger will be back. Our only real worry is RT and we do have a bunch of bodies in camp there, so hopefully one proves to be at least adequate. Also, strong blockers in the backfield with Hightower and Darrel Young and at TE with Cooley, Paulson and Paul. (Fred is more of a receiver).

RG3 needs to play at least a half to begin to adjust to the speed of the NFL game. Keep playbook vanilla, RG3 under center often, running PA, and getting basic reads down.

Re: Gameplan vs Bills:Vanilla or Butter Pecan?
I'm so sick of the word "vanilla" being used for football.
This started under the Zorn era, at least here on the WP and in the media. It's getting as bad as the word "gravitas" in political discussions.

Re: Gameplan vs Bills:Vanilla or Butter Pecan?
Instead of "vanilla" on Thursday, why not go to the other extreme and just run all trick plays. Then, no one know how to prepare for you, because they won't see any of those plays ever again in the regular season. That could be a definition of "vanilla", which means "don't run your regular season offense"!
No seriously, run what you need to run to get RG3's feet wet and comfortable, who care what the other teams take away from it. |

I like Vanilla ice-cream, but I also like Butter Pecan. I'll just be happy to see RGIII out there in a 'skins uniform playing a few snaps.

Re: Gameplan vs Bills:Vanilla or Butter Pecan?
Im all about the cake batter ice cream with cherries and chocolate chips.
Let (RG3) play 2 or 3 series, let the OLine (other than TW) play an entire half, maybe even a series into the 3rd quarter. At least those that are looking the most impressive in camp, and then go from there in preparing for the next week. The more live reps the real OLine gets before putting our brand new shiny toy out there, the better. |
