The Washington Commanders have seemingly found their 2023 QB1: Sam Howell

I hope those fools have realized that’s the way to go, resign TH as a backup while they are at it.

well that is bad news

until more is shown of him; he definitely doesn't check we are all set at QB1 box

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/c...g-qb-for-2023/

If that story is true , just LOL

What fucking quality OC is going to be excited to come here and be told he has a one game wonder QB to work with.

Until this franchise is sold everything is moot; we are officially in the lame duck mode.

If i was a OC of any worth i wouldn't come here; this franchise could be sold tomorrow and RR and his staff asked to pack their shit and move on.

Nothing of substance can happen here until its sold. It be like if you and your wife were house shopping but also filed for divorce.

Lol Howell is more than 1 game wonder QB. I would be happy with this move if it's true. Just to be clear, this does not mean I believe that Howell is a good QB. This has everything to do with the situation we are in today - the QB options is very limited and we are not in a position to swing big to acquire a QB (via trade or draft).

According to reports, Howell showed some good things in practices all year. Also, Howell played relatively well against a good defense with a patched up Oline and no RBs. Howell has the talents and the only issue with him is the footing, which can be resolved through coaching and practices. With that in mind, along with the fact that our QB options through free agency and draft, why wouldn't anyone want to give Howell a chance?

My ideal plan is to sign a QB and have an open competition between him and Howell during the training camp, and focus on strengthening the team through draft and FA. If the QB doesn't work out in 2023 then we would be in a better position to give up our capitals to get a real QB at the end.
I agree with that plan, but that only happens with the likes of Dalton, Brissett, Mayfield, Darnold, etc. If they decide to go after Derek Carr, and he actually comes here, then he's the starter.

100% he deserves a chance.

I don't think anyone hates Howell at all.

I believe the majority of the "haters" hate the idea of him being named QB1 in Jan 23.

He needs a opportunity to be QB1 but we also need someone else to compete for QB1 in 2023 (who it is i have no fucking idea and for all the scenarios every one is drawing up no one thought this time last year CW be on the roster [ not that it was a good move just saying we have really no idea what they are thinking])

Howell may not be the answer, but whether he succeeds or fails, going with him is the best option for the long term interests of the team. Sign a low price vet back-up, Heinike probably being the best choice for this team.

What?

How can he be the best long term option regardless if he succeeds or fails?

Literally makes 0 sense

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

Per JP: the team is planning on Howell as QB1 entering the off season but the door is not closed on signing or trading for a QB if the right fit is there.

I think I get the point : you can never know for sure if a QB is gonna pan out or not, but having a good QB on his rookie contract is a great situation to be in. So right now, not giving away any assets and giving yourself a chance with a kid that showed he has potential is the best long term option. How it actually pans out doesn't change the parameters of the situation at the point you made the decision.

And I agree with this approach. We may have a franchise QB on the roster, for free, so why gamble assets on something we may not need to buy in the first play ? Especially with the sale and probable change of HC coming up in the near future, I don't want Ron to make any huge future impacting moves.

Makes sense if you can see past 2023 (Which is why I said long term interests - and yes I'm aware most fans can't see beyond the next season - actually that is an American trait). A new coaching regime is almost certainly coming in 2024. Do you really want to saddle a new coach with the old coaches FA QB contract (ie Carr)? And especially if you traded draft picks for him? Howell is on a rookie contract, if in 2023, he succeeds the new coach has a young QB he can resign couple of years down the road, if he fails- not really a major problem as the new coach can then go and choose his own QB.
