Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft

Mel Kiper now has us picking up Gabbert (he now has Newton going to the Bills)

Washington RedskinsRecord: 6-10* Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
Gabbert might be more ready than Newton to read defenses at the NFL level, and as a quarterback with very good accuracy, instincts and size, he could come into a franchise in Washington that might need him early. Gabbert is a guy whose stock rose a lot this year and will be under the microscope during the workout process. But what he doesn't give you is a quarterback who elicits a wide range of opinions or the boom-or-bust concerns many have with Newton and Ryan Mallett.

I like that. We'll see what happens.

The more I read or hear about the QBs in this draft, the more I hope we can trade back, pick up an extra pick & reduce the risk of taking a qb. It just doesn't sound like there's anything close to a sure thing. If we do go qb at 10, I would be happy w/Newton and hope for the best.

I'm of the same thought.. My draft wish list at the QB position is: if we pick at 10-Newton only, then Kaepernick in a (or multiple) trade down or Locker or Ponder in the 2nd. I really don't want any parts of Locker but if he's there at our pick in the 2nd round then he's worth a shot based on his athleticism.

I'm really hoping that we trade down a few times in this draft because its relatively deep in many positions so we need to stock up.

What if we take Gabbert ? I guess what I'm asking is who can they draft that will not have you ready to go all Thelma and Louise ?

Not a fan of any of the QBs currently available for the first round. DE/NT or OLB should be the selection at our current spot in terms of the talent and position of need.

Maybe he's one of those "better in the NFL" types but personally watching him hasn't inspired a lot of confidence.

Cam has signed the biggest endorsement deal ever for a rookie to be:

Report: Cam Newton gets lucrative endorsement deal - ESPN

Could this be one more sign that he's destined for greatness?

Yet another reason to avoid Locker like the plague.. As much as I dislike PFT, they are quoting a reliable source..

Baseball could be an option for Jake Locker | ProFootballTalk

I saw that to. Can someone explain the $250,000 signing bonus? I can't imagine the NCAA would allow a player to sign a pro contract for baseball and then turn around and play college football. Plus it's not like he's completely disconnected from the Angels, going so far as to travel to Arizona for workouts with the Angels Minor League affiliates.

Quote:
Angels general manager Tony Reagins said Locker has lived up to his obligations under the contract, which include traveling to Arizona periodically to work out at the team's minor league facility.
Either way I guess this is part of the reason that Locker was comfortable enough to pass up the $40 or $50 million he would have made in the draft was because he had baseball as a fallback option. Obviously the difference in pay is huge for now but the fact that he had options besides football had to be a contributing factor.

Still I wouldn't say it's a reason to avoid Locker. Though I will admit he makes me very nervous as a pro prospect (mainly due to his accuracy issues) he's still good enough to make me jump on the bandwagon should we take him on draft day.

Honestly though if I was talented enough to play both pro baseball and football I would easily choose baseball, despite the fact that my love for football is exponentially higher. Less wear and tear on the body and guaranteed contracts are a much better deal then contracts that are only 25%-35% guaranteed. Not to mention the horror stories about NFL veterans that date back as recently as the Dave Duerson tragedy.
