Re: Shanahan Tells Banks He Better Learn to Play WR

This oftentimes happens to a Redskins player, where he shows flashes of being good, and then the Redskins release him and he ends up playing better for his new team. Banks has had a few long returns during his two year career, but he hasn't made opposing special teams coaches afraid of him. He has the speed to break a return into either a long gain or a TD every time he fields a punt or kickoff, but for some reason he only does so occasionally.

Happens less often than people believe and why if he only occasionally breaks free for a long gain or TD now do you think he'll go somewhere else and make Devin Hester look like his bitch?

Yeah, I agree - you HAVE to be willing to cut non-performing players, and can't be afraid of them having success later on. Can't afford to hold onto a person that's not performing -- "potential" has never won a Super Bowl. Also, it does not motivate the rest of the team if you tolerate underperforming players.

For every Redskin that has done well when we cut them, I'm sure we can list 20 others that did not. I think of McNabb, Haynesworth, Portis, M.Kelly, D.Thomas (still on special teams), etc... There are also players that performed better when cut from the Patriots, Green Bay, NYG, Ravens -- there's always a risk when you cut a player. And we've picked up guys from other teams like Carriker and Fletcher - as free agents who have outperformed expectations.

Not to mention -- it's not always reflective of bad judgement. Sometimes when the player does well in a different team, it could be the new team runs a system better suited to their skills.

Still say that we evaluate closely Banks again, but cut him if he doesn't perform. Can't afford to waste the roster spot.

Maybe because Banks has potential. Maybe on special teams, a different special teams coach will come up with a blocking scheme that will allow Banks to run for longer gains on punts and kickoffs. Or maybe good fortune may play in Banks favor if the Redskins release and he goes elsewhere and performs better. But I hope Banks remains a Redskin.

Or maybe Banks, fast but not elusive, just isn't that good.

A great returner doesn't need any special blocking scheme. Hester's returns are mostly his doing.

Banks does have talent. An undrafted NFL player doesn't make a roster without having some talent.

I didn't say he didn't have talent. I said he wasn't that good. There's a difference.

Every year many players with talent enter the NFL, find that they cannot compete in the NFL at a high level, and then either ride the bench or get cut. Banks appears to be one of these players.

Re: Shanahan Tells Banks He Better Learn to Play WR

Roster spots are just too valuable to have returners that do nothing else. I've always preferred to have kick returning/punt returning duties be assigned to someone that does something else primarily. Your 2nd tier wideouts and db's should be returning kicks.

I'd rather have his roster spot be occupied by an undrafted offensive lineman project.

I also dont believe in the designated long snapper position. If a starting center cant snap the ball 10 yards consistently, he shouldnt be the starting center.

Look at how small the man is. He's a tiny player and not your typical sizable wide receiver. He's made the Redskins roster for 2 straight years because of his speed. With punt returning, I'm not sure why he doesn't have what Mike Nelms had, or what Brian Mitchell had. Both of those men were excellent kickoff/punt returners for us when they played. Banks has speed yet it's not good enough to allow him to break through kick coverage or make him a respected dangerous return man. Maybe what he's lacking is vision to see the whole field once he fields the ball.

I have no clue what your stance is on him. You seem to fluctuate

I haven't contradicted myself in saying anything about Banks. I've been saying the same thing about him all along. Many people here don't think much of him as a return man but I do. Maybe I'm the only one here that thinks highly of him.

So you think maybe he lacks the vision to be a great returner but if we let him go he'll undoubtedly be amazing somewhere else...just because that's our luck? Is that it?
