Re: Pick 47 Trent Murphy

Am I the only one who doesn't hate this the idea of this kid coming here? Maybe because I don't watch college football and I've never heard of him until now but let's see how he does during the season. I mean honestly that's the only way to tell what a guys capable of doing.

However, we have some guys coming up that will require big money. Alf Mo, RG3, and Jordan Reed will all likely require fairly hefty contracts. Not to mention Kerrigan on the defensive side.
RG3 definitely, Morris for sure but Reed uh uh. He's only played one year and couldn't stay healthy in his lone season. Jordan has potential and I iiked what I saw but let's give him more than a year and see if he can stay healthy.

For what its worth I'd rather have Orakpo than Kerrigan. I'm just not sold on #91.

Kerrigan, Trent Williams, Rak, RG3, and AlfMo are our big contracts coming up in the next couple of years.

Wonder what Morris will ask, assuming he continues to put up 1000+ yard seasons. Maybe 6 mil? The others will be a real b**** to resign; maybe 10 for Kerrigan, 12 for Trent, 12-13 for Orakpo, and 20 for G3(using today's cap limit)? But who do you let walk out of that group? Griffin, Trent, and either Orakpo or Kerrigan are the must resigns.

And you have to think about Reed's upcoming contract if he gets over the injury thing, plus Garcon's, Jackson's, and Hatcher's large contracts. Some of our best young draftees right now will be gone in 2 years, victims of cap restraints. Or not? Will we actually resign all those players?

Just hand-wringing out loud...

I won't be surprised if Morris doesn't see a 2nd contract here. Just makes no sense to pay backs big money anymore.

Also no need to start sweating the cap now without knowing where it might be 2-3 years from now.

Agree on all points. I envision Gruden being more of a pass-first guy anyway, so Morris's role will probably drop off.

Also, people are doing the math on the cap based on back of the envelope figures based on average annual salary. As we should all know by now, average annual salary does not equate to cap hit. You can have a deal worth $10M per year but a cap hit of only $6M - $8M in the first few years.

They can afford to keep this nucleus together if they want to. But yeah, so much changes in the NFL from year to year, no sense even worrying about it now.

I agree. Unfortunately for the RB's of the league, unless something is done to create a way to pay them, they just won't see big 2nd deals anymore.

Also agree about the Cap. At the start of the league year Dallas looked to be in a god awful cap situation, they currently have 8Million that will have a good chunk roll over to next year. I certainly expect and hope that the FO is paying attention to it, but I doubt there are very many fans that should be worrying about what will happen with contracts 3 years out.

While I hope that Morris can stay here as long as he is healthy and productive, it wouldnt suprise me either. Hope it doesnt become a get rid of Stephen Davis for Trung Canidate type thing.

Cap is expected to go up significantly over the next few years.

Plus... you draft guys. You can't count on resigning everyone, or everyone demanding money that correlates to their production. We're going to lose some guys, it's life. We need to make sure we lose the right guys and have people behind them.

Trent, Griffin, and Kerrigan are musts for me. I'm not an Orakpo fan - unless he comes down in price to where I believe is reasonable.

If there's one thing we've always been good at it's negotiating the cap year in-year out. It'd be nice to see that put to use with quality players that contribute to making a quality team, instead of what we saw over the last 14 years.

I don't see why anyone would pay either Kerrigan or orakpo a lot of money. Neither has shown consistency. OverPaying Kerrigan would be just as bad a overpaying orakpo. Both are flash players against weak tackles.

I disagree, I think kerrigan has shown more than that. But, my larger thought is that he won't demand top dollar like orakpo currently is. That may not wind up working out, we'll see.

Orakpo needs to bump up his game this year to earn his money.

I'd really hate to see Morris go. Of course it all depends on how he does this season. If he winds up with another 1300-1600 yard season, it would be hard to justify not keeping Alf. Of course I understand that in today's NFL, the backs play second fiddle to quarterbacks and receivers, but I think you still need a solid running game to make it all work.
