Now my friends have told me a combination of light & dark alcohol, combined with prescription medication, would do the trick. Is this true?

Try using some saline nasal spray.
Good advice. I had nose surgery and the doctor recommended I use that afterward. I still use it when my nose feels dry inside every few days, just to keep things moist in there.

I was blowing bloody mucus out for a while and still, if I neglect the spray for a while, I might see a tinge of red in there.

I like Simply Saline, it has a cool nozzle and propels it up in there. Makes less mess than the bottles you have to squeeze too.

over

Also, you might want to try a Neti Pot to clean it all out thoroughly. I used one after I broke my nose because I couldn't breathe and it helped immensely. Periodic cleanings keep things clear and will cut down on your allergies. It can also flush a cold out fast too. They use saline also.

I have this one:

You'll probably choke the first time or two but it feels amazing when you're done. Seeing that huge clump of crap fall out of your nose will shock you and you'll be a believer.
