Steven Jackson fined 5k for throwing ball into the stands

I don’t really like all the show boating idiots like Chad Johnson or TO perform on a regular basis, but throwing the ball into the stands seems fine to me, almost a NFL tradition. Whats the harm in that, how is that excessive celebration? I didn’t see the play, but unless he pegged it at some Seahawks fan or offered it to the Ref then pulled a “yoink” and tossed it into the stands whats the problem?

His team is losing he throws the balls into the stands to the few fans that actually showed up in St. Louis, and to the even fewer fans that were still in the stadium watching after the game was all but over.

I think they're more like $80 a pop, but I agree that a fine is stupid is this case.

I all ways thought it was a standard fien of $500 for tossing a ball or handing a ball to a fan. I guess throwing a ball in celebration is looked at differently and I also don't know why it could not be a penalty for celebrating with an object.

Yes, throwing the ball into the stands has had a standard fine for a long time. I think it used to be $750, but was upped to $2500 a few years ago. Maybe it's been upped again to $5k?

As for the price of the football, MSRP of an official Wilson game ball is $110. Amazon sells them for $80, and I'm sure the NFL gets a good deal on the 36 game balls they use for each game.

According to the 2008 NFL Fine Schedule, the fine for throwing a ball into the stands is a mandatory $5,000 for the first offense and $10,000 for the second offense. I'm not sure what changes, if any, were made for the 2009 season. Here are some of the other listed fines ... pretty interesting list.

First Offense: $25,000
Second Offense: $50,000

Verbal or other Non-Physical Offense Against Official

Pretty interesting stuff thanks!

Still 5000 seems petty and harsh.

Geesh, $10K the next time he does it.

Anything over the cost of the ball is ridiculous.

Yeah, it should be the cost of the ball plus one ball you sign and donate to charity. I view giving the ball away as a positive thing.

I wonder what happened when Cory Dillon threw his pads and helmet into the stands after his last Cincinnati game?

Re: Steven Jackson fined 5k for throwing ball into the stands

I can understand charging the price of the football, but what the hell. Throwing a ball into the stands will make people actually want to come back to a game.

NFL is going to shoot themselves in the foot hard one day.

Re: Steven Jackson fined 5k for throwing ball into the stands

I think that the fine is much more than the cost of the ball in part because they have a limited number of balls on game day and they don't want to run out. But, yeah, the fine used to be $500, not $5k.

Re: Steven Jackson fined 5k for throwing ball into the stands

I recall when it was 1000 I believe.. there was a guy who frequently threw his TD balls way up into the stands but his name is escaping me at the moment. They said it was a "safety issue" but we all knew that wasn't the case.
